Publisher's summary

Common sense tells us that we are beings made up of physical matter, that we have no special powers other than those granted by the laws of nature. However, one of the most important recent discoveries in science tell us we are capable of changing our physical world across dimensions of time and space simply by using our minds.

This is a program about accessing this incredible power by reaching within yourself. About accessing it in a way that mankind has used since the beginning of time. Accessing it in a way you may already be very familiar and comfortable with. Through prayer. The Power of Prayer is a personal journey exploring the link between science and spirituality. Recounted by a medical doctor, Larry Dossey M.D., he leads you through the same realizations that have profoundly changed his own life, and his understanding of the natural world, and what our role as humans is in it.

Through an examination of the scientific experiments, anecdotal third-person accounts, and stories about his own experiences in the practice of medicine, Dr. Dossey will bring you to new assumptions about yourself and the spiritual nature within you. You'll discover:

  • How to find an approach to prayer that is meaningful for you
  • Specific factors which influence your prayer's effectiveness
  • The important difference between curing and healing
  • New ways to get into a state of prayerfulness and how to express yourself with prayer
  • A new understanding of the illness or imperfections in yourself and others
  • The power of love and empathy and how it can transcend space and time
  • Five universal prayer techniques used by mystics
  • The power of "letting go" and how to develop an "attitude of gratitude"
  • How to make prayer a part of your daily rituals of life
  • The extraordinary body of medical evidence on the power of prayer

Deeply Moving & Convincing

The presentation of the empirical evidence of prayer was amazing. this book is at least over 20 years old and the fact that more of the science around prayer and consciousness is still only just becoming more mainstream is boggling. For those who may be atheist or agnostic, a read through this book will give some real hard evidence to consider regarding the power of prayer regardless of any conception of 'god'. It defines prayer as "communication with the divine" leaving the definition of communication and divine up to the reader. It also shows that prayer has measurable and statistically significant effects in the laboratory, whether being tested on human subjects that may be healed, micro-organisms in a petri dish which can be protected from the effects of anti-biotics, or the numbers produced by a random number generator which can be swayed by using the power of intent and prayer. One of the most beautiful things that comes out of all of this scientific review, is that love and compassion are the key ingredients in any form of prayer.

I have mixed feelings about this book

I have mixed feelings about this book. I agree there are studies which show prayer helps ill people. There are also studies which show prayer has no impact. I know from experience what were calling prayer here works. If you take out all religious involvement from prayer and as for help, support, etc you'll get it if you're meant too. Just listen to the song unanswered prayers as a great example as to why some don't work. My own grandfather said thanks to the prayers when people prayed for his healing after surgery. After saying thanks he said he was done and died!

My personal approach is to all for help in a particular situation or with a particular matter. I will also never question there is help when you call on it! Having been lost with no cell signal at night in the middle of nowhere with wild animals all around me I asked. Suddenly my map app worked without any signal going me home. I know there was no signal because my email didn't sink until I made it almost to town. So, this does work! when it works or not is up to you.

Why not 5 stars? I keep getting a religious undertone to what the author is saying even though they kept saying God/Goddess. I also can't recall any comparison of reports showing prayer didn't work only ones where it did work. I have read other books where they reference both studies. does this mean this book is worthless? No, it would have brought more balance into it! I will still recommend prayer to people and frame it into their belief system.

Point of view of a Christian

Didn’t speak to me, and I found it somewhat basic. As someone who didn’t grow up with christian dogma, I don’t have to break out of it. I really wanted to like it, but basically basically just found it annoying. With the exception of when he’s ragging on the new age folks with the law of attraction.
