New from the author of The Keeper of Night comes a YA fantasy duology set in an alternate Tang Dynasty China, where a poor biracial girl with the ability to raise the dead gets caught up in the dangerous political games of the royal family.
Zilan dreams of becoming a royal alchemist, of providing for her family by making alchemical gold and gems for the wealthy to eat in order to stay young forever. But for now, she’s trapped in her impoverished village in southern China, practicing an illegal form of alchemy to keep food on the table—resurrecting the dead, for a price.
When Zilan finally has the chance to complete her imperial exams, she ventures to the capital to compete against the best alchemists in the country in tasks she’ll be lucky to survive, let alone pass. On top of that, her reputation for raising the dead has followed her to the capital, and the Crown Prince himself seeks out her help, suspecting a coming assassination attempt.
The more Zilan succeeds in her alchemy, the more she gets caught in the dangerous political games of the royal family. There are monsters lurking within the palace walls, and it’s only a matter of time before they—and secrets of Zilan’s past—catch up with her.

Story
In the Dominions, the dead linger, violent and unpredictable, unless a bonesmith severs the ghost from its earthly remains. For bonesmith Wren, becoming a valkyr—a ghost-fighting warrior—is a chance to solidify her place in the noble House of Bone and impress her frequently absent father. But when sabotage causes Wren to fail her qualifying trial, she is banished to the Border Wall, the last line of defense against a wasteland called the Breach where the vicious dead roam unchecked.

Story
At the spry young age of twenty-five, Sai has led a quiet life, keeping the family teahouse up and running—even if that means ignoring the past-due notices—and taking care of his ailing mother. But he has a not-so-secret gift that he’s parlayed into a side career: he was born with the ability see the red threads of fate between soulmates, which lends itself nicely to matchmaking. Sai has thus far been content not to follow his own thread, the only one he’s ever seen that’s gray and fraying.

Story
Kim Hani has retired from a life of devouring souls. She is, simply put, too full. Once known as the infamous Scarlet Fox, she now spends her days working in a coffee shop and annoying a particularly irritating, if unfairly handsome, trickster god as often as she can. That god is Seokga the Fallen. Exiled from the heavenly kingdom of Okhwang, he now begrudgingly resides in the mortal realm, working toward his redemption and suffering through his interactions with the particularly infuriating, if sneakily charming, gumiho barista at his favorite café.

Great narration, thoughtful and engaging story
The care that went into the writing and narration of this book is evident and makes for an excellent read, from the historical notes to the careful pronunciation of names. Skillfully balances an imaginative alternative storyline with respect for a complex period of Chinese history and culture. Will be on the lookout for others from this author in the future.

Well Executed Plot Twists
Love Kylie Lee Baker’s writing. While her main characters are a bit frustrating at times, it’s because she beautifully captures the mind of a young person attempting to make life changing decisions. Her world building is top tier and I cannot wait for the next book in October!

Full Blood Alchemist
Enjoyable and well performed tale. I was recommended this because someone said it was like The Apothecary Dairies, but the vibes and the way the world works reminds me much more of Full Metal Alchemist. Doesn't take anything away from the story, doesn't feel like a copy, if anything could almost be in the same world!

Exciting, Funny, and Bloody
This was my first Kylie Lee Baker novel, and I had so much reading it. The characters were well fleshed out, and the ducks, the ducks! Who could’ve anticipated ducks in a book about alchemy and necromancy? I cannot wait to check out the author’s other works. Also, the narration was excellent.
