Publisher's summary

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation, and triumph over it, ever written.

Critic reviews

Audie Award Finalist, Inspirational/Spiritual, 2007

Known for The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis wrote the wittiest defense of Christianity ever. Humorist John Cleese won AudioFile Earphones for his 1999 enactment of the correspondence between two devils plotting the damnation of one man's soul. Ralph Cosham is a slightly less demented fiend, but the text itself remains hilarious.... Cosham's organ-like voice also lends resonance.... This is, therefore, the best audio ever spoken of the funniest defense of Christianity ever written." (AudioFile magazine)

"Lewis' satire is a Christian classic....[his] take on human nature is as on-target as it was when the letters were first published in 1941." (Library Journal)

The moody

The most important thing is to understand knowledge. But oh how knowledge is suppressed. Please think for yourselves.

Fantastic!

Couldn't put it down! The story was brilliantly written and the reader did a great job with it. Who knew you could get so much good advice from a top-level demon's "Don't list."

A great read with a great concept

I really enjoyed listening to this! The format and narrative device with Screwtape and Wormwood was a delight. It had a delightfully (and perhaps surprisingly) nuanced take on all the moral musings.

Good literature to chew on.

The story provides the human condition in an intrinsic way which would be entertaining whether one does or does not subscribe to Christianity.

wow how the time doesn't change

at first as a Christian I though maybe I shouldn't be reading this as it's in the devil's perspective. however C.S Lewis is a brilliant writer and this book is no different. I had to remind myself that this book was written in the 40s even though it fit perfectly in 22. what a great example of the devil at work in us and a wonder it's not more popular.

The Devil discusses the details

C S Lewis' The Screwtape Letters is a delightful collection of correspondence between a senior member of 'our father below' and his nephew an entry level demon on Earth trying to collect souls. The series of letters provide much advice towards conducting an indirect play for humans by pointing out their foibles and tendencies that highlight many of the contradictions of modern life. This edition also includes a piece that had been published separately as 'Screwtape proposes a toast' where Screwtape addresses the graduating class of hell's latest demons.

Lewis was quite notable for identifying the peculiarities of the human condition especially as exploited by organized religion and societal mores in general. These letters outline a 'how-to' manual for corrupting humans in an insidious manner and easy-going manner that resonates as well today as it did in 1940.

The narration is wonderful with the air of an experienced uncle always looking for his favorite nephew.
