Publisher's summary

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation, and triumph over it, ever written.

Critic reviews

Audie Award Finalist, Inspirational/Spiritual, 2007

Known for The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis wrote the wittiest defense of Christianity ever. Humorist John Cleese won AudioFile Earphones for his 1999 enactment of the correspondence between two devils plotting the damnation of one man's soul. Ralph Cosham is a slightly less demented fiend, but the text itself remains hilarious.... Cosham's organ-like voice also lends resonance.... This is, therefore, the best audio ever spoken of the funniest defense of Christianity ever written." (AudioFile magazine)

"Lewis' satire is a Christian classic....[his] take on human nature is as on-target as it was when the letters were first published in 1941." (Library Journal)

The portrait painted by Screwtape has come to fruition in many ways. Great writing and performance.

Magnificent

One of the funniest most scathing portraits of humanity to ever be penned. Read it for the first time at age 18 and it is still as relevant and outright funny 38 years later. Simply must be experienced no matter if you're a C.S. Lewis fan or your stance on Christianity.

True to this day in age as then

It’s so clear how every man at every period in time struggles with temptation and life’s troubles when you see it from multiple perspectives. Always a great read and great for kids in 12-18+.

One of a kind book, excellently read

The narrator was perfect, as the wise veteran, guiding the newbie along in his career.

I especially appreciate the afterward about CS Lewis' reflections on writing this work.

Absolutely necessity that Americans read this!

This book seems to hold many explanations as to why our society has fallen to such lows, and allows for the interpretations of how to see the true evils in the world and to fix them.

Always excellent and convicting

Ralph Cosham is one of my favourite readers of Lewis, and as always did an excellent job with Screwtape letters. I’ve read it several times and found it as I always have eye-opening, and convicting.

I'm in Tears

If only I could have read this book 5 years ago, before fatigue and conflicting values would make me rationalize the utter destruction of every blessing I've enjoyed from God. This destruction of everything I held dear and hopeful was done by my very own self, for the relentless requests of three people so dear to me.
I don't know where to go from here, but the fact that I'm still living, albeit with the temptation of suicide daily, inspires me to continue to resist darkness and hopefully identify it with greater clarity.
As for the narration—I've listened in segments varying from 20 minutes to 2 hours. Seems hard to imagine that anyone's voice remains untedious infinitely. I also can't imagine this being read by any other voice.
Deep gratitude to everyone who made this book and recitation accessible to me.
