Publisher's summary
Over the course of two years, Coyle conducted more than 200 hours of interviews with Hamilton and spoke candidly with numerous teammates, rivals, and friends. The result is an explosive book that takes us, for the first time, deep inside a shadowy, fascinating, and surreal world of unscrupulous doctors, anything-goes team directors, and athletes so relentlessly driven to succeed that they would do anything—and take any risk, physical, mental, or moral—to gain the edge they needed to win.
Tyler Hamilton was once one of the world’s best-liked and top-ranked cyclists—a fierce competitor renowned among his peers for his uncanny endurance and epic tolerance for pain. In the 2003 Tour de France, he finished fourth despite breaking his collarbone in the early stages—and grinding 11 of his teeth down to the nerves along the way. He started his career with the U.S. Postal Service team in the 1990s and quickly rose to become Lance Armstrong’s most trusted lieutenant and a member of his inner circle.
For the first three of Armstrong’s record seven Tour de France victories, Hamilton was by Armstrong’s side, clearing his way. But just weeks after Hamilton reached his own personal pinnacle—winning the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics—his career came to a sudden, ignominious end: He was found guilty of doping and exiled from the sport.
From the exhilaration of his early, naïve days in the peloton, Hamilton chronicles his ascent to the uppermost reaches of this unforgiving sport. In the mid-1990s, the advent of a powerful new blood-boosting drug called EPO reshaped the world of cycling, and a relentless, win-at-any-cost ethos took root. Its psychological toll would drive many of the sport’s top performers to substance abuse, depression, even suicide. For the first time ever, Hamilton recounts his own battle with clinical depression, speaks frankly about the agonizing choices that go along with the decision to compete at a world-class level, and tells the story of his complicated relationship with Lance Armstrong.
A journey into the heart of a never-before-seen world, The Secret Race is a riveting, courageous act of witness from a man who is as determined to reveal the hard truth about his sport as he once was to win the Tour de France.

Greg LeMond stunned the sporting world by becoming the first American to win the Tour de France in 1986, defeating French cycling legend Bernard Hinault. Nine months later, LeMond lay in a hospital bed, his career as a bicycle racer seemingly over. And yet, barely two years after this crisis, LeMond mounted a comeback. In 1989, he once again won the Tour - by a narrow margin of eight seconds. It remains the closest Tour de France in history. The Comeback chronicles the life of this great American athlete, from his roots in Nevada and California to the heights of global fame.

Every step of the way, she has seen the way that our sports systems—originally designed by men, for men and boys—fail young women and girls as much as empower them. Written with heart and verve, Good for a Girl is a joyful love letter to the running life.

In fact, she thought it might be a blessing. She was far from peak form—recovering from illness and questioning her running future—and didn’t expect much of herself that day. But as she ticked off mile after mile in the brutal conditions, passing familiar landmarks on the course she knew and loved, something shifted. Opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Des tapped into her inner strength and found a reason to race.

From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned. In clear, taut prose, Agassi evokes his loyal brother, his wise coach, his gentle trainer, all the people who help him regain his balance and find love at last with Stefanie Graf.

In 2015, Russia’s Anti-Doping Centre was suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) following revelations of an elaborate state-sponsored doping programme. Involving a nearly undetectable steroid delivery system known as ‘Duchesse cocktail’, tampering and switching of urine samples and a complex state-sanctioned cover-up, the programme was masterminded by Grigory Rodchenkov. Story
On June 29, 1919, one day after the Treaty of Versailles brought about the end of World War I, nearly seventy cyclists embarked on the thirteenth Tour de France. From Paris, the war-weary men rode down the western coast on a race that would trace the country’s border, through seaside towns and mountains to the ghostly western front. Traversing a cratered postwar landscape, the cyclists faced near-impossible odds and the psychological scars of war. Most of the athletes had arrived straight from the front, where so many fellow countrymen had suffered or died.

Story
A London cycle courier with a taste for adventure, Emily Chappell entered an extraordinary new race - The Transcontinental - in which riders must find their own way, entirely unassisted, across Europe in the shortest time possible. On her second attempt, she won the women's event, covering nearly 4,000 miles in 13 days and 10 hours, sleeping in short bursts wherever exhaustion took her.

A must for Cycling fans
A very heartfelt genuine account. Open and honest explanation that takes you into a world few outsiders have been. After listening I have a much better understanding and empathy for all involved especially the racers who just wanted to go faster.

fascinating story, but no fan of Sean Runnette
What did you love best about The Secret Race?
The detailed accounts of behind the scenes racing, and how they lined up with well known events.
What didn’t you like about Sean Runnette’s performance?
He sounds like an old man with a denture problem. Was hard to get used to, a bit distracting the entire book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes I listened whenever I could.

An honest account of the world of cycling
What made the experience of listening to The Secret Race the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed how open Tyler Hamilton was in telling us about the secret world of professional cycling. He didn't space a single detail or a single name in telling us about his years on the tour.
What other book might you compare The Secret Race to and why?
It reminded me of Andre Agassi's "Open," another very honest, no-holds-barred sports autobiography. I thoroughly enjoyed both.
Which character – as performed by Sean Runnette – was your favorite?
Tyler, of course. You feel for him and understand the struggles that he had to go through.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It's pretty long to listen to all in one sitting, but I was always looking forward to getting back into my car to hear the next chapter.
Any additional comments?
If you're thinking of buying this book to get the inside scoop on Lance Armstrong, the book will not disappoint.

Brings you right into the back rooms of cycling's finest and darkest seasons.
The book was filled with details, episodes and antidotes about cycling's underworld, in a concise and compelling manner.

Just spectacular
What did you love best about The Secret Race?
I was truly impressed by Mr. Hamilton, both his story and his character. The only question is does he really speak that eloquently in real life? :) It is really a great book and a somewhat terrifying look into professional bike racing.

The book title pretty much sums it up.
Where does The Secret Race rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Only my second book but with athletics being close to my heart, the best so far.
What did you like best about this story?
Being a competitive triathlete I particularly enjoyed the story during the gritty details of intense racing.
Which scene was your favorite?
The encounter between Tyler and Lance on the bike after Tyler was told by Floyd Landis of Lance squealing to authorities.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Hey Lance, burn any bridges lately?
