Publisher's summary

The New York Times best-selling author of The Widow returns with a brand-new novel of twisting psychological suspense about every parent’s worst nightmare....

When two 18-year-old girls go missing in Thailand, their families are thrust into the international spotlight: desperate, bereft, and frantic with worry. What were the girls up to before they disappeared?

Journalist Kate Waters always does everything she can to be first to the story, first with the exclusive, first to discover the truth - and this time is no exception. But she can’t help but think of her own son, whom she hasn’t seen in two years, since he left home to go travelling.

As the case of the missing girls unfolds, they will all find that even this far away, danger can lie closer to home than you might think....

Critic reviews

“A nail-biting tale of missing teens and the parents who worry for them. Fiona Barton’s first two novels, The Widow and The Child, were international bestsellers....The Suspect deserves equal success. It’s...expertly written....Barton’s characterizations are exceptional.” (The Washington Post)

“Barton is a stunning storyteller. Her career as a journalist has helped make this story terrifyingly real. Every turn of the plot feels authentic and very scary.” (Library Journal, starred review)

“[I]n Barton's expert hands, The Suspect transcends the typical to become something more: A gripping psychological suspense about the changing relationship between parents and their grown children.…masterfully written, expertly plotted, and skillfully paced....Using her exceptional storytelling skills and her keen insight into the minds of each of her characters…Barton creates a twisty mystery that packs a serious emotional punch.” (Bustle)

“Utterly engrossing…I lived inside this book for two days - and I’m still thinking about it. Superb!”(Shari Lapena, New York Times best-selling author of The Couple Next Door)

Excellent story

Story keeps you on the edge of your seat and I couldn’t wait to hear what came next. I enjoyed how they used multiple readers to tell the story as I listened to it on audible.

Great suspense

Another entertaining, well written suspense story by this author. It's the kind of story that is hard to put down ( or turn off if listening.) I liked the twisty end that gives you something to think about....did Kate Waters mike the right choice ?
The narrators were ok, not bad enough to be a distraction, but none of them were brilliant, either.

Great book, really pulled me in

I loved this book. It grabbed my attention for so many reasons. Maybe being a mother of a
15 year old made it seem so much more real and scary. So many small things decisions made on behalf of the characters that impacted the story. Definitely shared this story with my son and with my best friend’s daughter. Great book.

Boring

I enjoyed The Widow and looked forward to The Suspect, however, the story jumped all over the place and I knew early on who the killer was. Not sure why we had to suffer through the detective’s wife’s cancer and we never learned if Rosie’s mother accepted her daughter’s behavior or why her daughter behaved the way she did. The narrators were boring as well and didn’t bring life to the characters. I don’t write many reviews but I felt this needed writing.

Interesting

Interesting. The story is different than expected. I found myself wanting to see what was going to happen next. Even after I figured out who did what.

Well read

Good story, with a few twists and turns but ending seemed to fizzle out too quickly.

Barton's 3rd has Kate at her vulnerable best

The pacing, the content, the suspense, the narration, everything was perfect. Barton's third outing with Kate Waters is sublime.

Great Performance and Ok Story

I liked the way the author often switched perspectives. It kepted me interested. I didn't care for the young people's personalities. Their whole situation made me feel yucky. I did not care for the ending. It wasn't bitter sweet like the authors other book The Child. It was just more yucky situation that effected more people. The performance was great.

The Suspect is an intense read

Every parents nightmare - they're fresh out of high school girls go to Thailand for some unsupervised summer fun! As I read this I kept picturing my own daughter at the center of the story and boy did I get some major heebee geebees! Great mystery and great little nugget of a twist at the end. Fiona Barton does such an incredible job with her characters and yet still manages to present them as real people just living their lives.

Bravo

I listen and read this particular genre exclusively and this is one of the “good ones”. Definitely worth a credit.
