Publisher's summary

After his first grisly crime, Harvey Louis Carignan beat a death sentence and continued to manipulate, rape, and bludgeon women to death - using want ads to lure his young female victims. And time after time, justice was thwarted by a killer whose twisted legal genius was matched only by his sick savagery. Here, complete with the testimony of women who suffered his unspeakable sexual abuses and barely escaped with their lives and of the police who at last put him behind bars, is one of the most shattering and thought-provoking true-crime stories of our time.

writing great

Excellent writing and detailed account, narrator rather annoying. ..exaggerated speech...as though he thought he were on stage auditioning. I really enjoy Ann Rule's work.

A Beast of a Man!

I added this one to my library’s true crime collection and it was pretty good. An up close look at a man with quite an unfortunate past growing up, but his bitterness led to a life of pure evil. Be warned that this contains some very troubling graphic material involved with the crimes.

One thing that was odd: The title. I thought the perp’s MO in this book would be to place want ads as a means to offend. But there were very few of these, I think just one. The narration was fine, not great, but not terrible as some have mentioned. I’ve heard worse!

Interesting

The story interesting and woven together very well. The narrator sounded like a computer voice. At times it was hard to focus on the story because the narrator sounded so mechanical / robotic.

Story good but…

The narrator sounds stilted and robotic. There should be more of a flow. Story is Ann Rule so they are always good

It’s good not great.

I’ve listened to better. Definitely not a fan of the narration but it’s not the worst.

Classic Ann Rule

Ann Rule always had a way of telling disturbing stories with straightforward skill and respect for the victims. The cruelty of this douchebag is outlined with clarity and avoids the salacious detail that would make one ashamed to be caught reading it. The narrator bothered me at first with his overly measured tone, but I got used to it and had no problem with it by chapter two. Great listen if you like true crime.

Very Intriguing Story

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. it was really amazing to see the facts laid out and how the violence of the crimes played out.... I was not a huge fan of this narrator, but the overall story was engaging.

Not A Good First Read For Ann Rule

⭐⭐⭐ 3 STARS This audiobook was worth listening to, but it was an average read. I have purchased quite a bit of Ann Rule books, but have never listened to one until now. I had heard really good things about her as an author; that she was the best at true crime. I think maybe because I was expecting more from it because it was my first Ann Rule audiobook or book at all. I have to say I was a little disappointed with it as far as the story telling. It sounds and reads like a lot of other true crime novels that I have read. Maybe this was one of her flops or just one that didn't do as good as something like "Stranger Beside Me". Like I said, it's definitely worth reading or listening to, but I don't think it's her best work. I will not be giving up on Rule books and plan to read much more of her work. I remain hopeful. Does anyone agree with me about this particular book? Appreciate you taking the time to read my review.
