Resumen del Editor

From number one New York Times best-selling author Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings, book one of the Stormlight Archive, begins an incredible new saga of epic proportion.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them and won by them.

One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where 10 armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.

Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar's niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan's motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

The result of more than 10 years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.

Speak again the ancient oaths:

Life before death.

Strength before weakness.

Journey before destination.

And return to men the Shards they once bore.

The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Editor's Pick: Best of the Decade

Here’s to another 10 years at the top
"My journey as a Brandon Sanderson fan began more than a decade ago. My brother and I discovered one of his very first published books, Mistborn, at a gas station rest stop in high school and both of us have been hooked ever since. But Brandon Sanderson, who started out as our little secret, has grown to be one of the biggest and most respected names in fantasy today. It’s been such a joy and delight to be his fan as he’s only gotten better and better at creating compelling, creative, and human stories over the years. Is it weird to say that I feel proud? There is no doubt in my mind that his epic series, the Stormlight Archive, deserves a spot as the best of the decade."—Melissa B., Audible Editor

Best books I've ever read

I spend two to three hours commuting everyday to and from work. In order to stay sane, I began listening to audiobooks about 4 years ago... concentrating mainly on sci-fi and fantasy series. You can go ahead and do the math (because I'm not going to) but that works out to a lot of books. I listened to the first two installments of the Stormlight Archive several years ago and when I found out Brandon Sanderson finally finished the third book (thank you very much) I decided to reread them. I wondered, after listening to so very many books in this genre in the intervening years, if I would still be just as impressed. I most definitely am! This is the best series I've ever read and I highly recommend it.

Storms!!

This is the second time I’ve listened to The Way Of Kings. The first time around I probably wouldn’t have made it through the first hour if the book haven’t been recommended to me by someone I trust knows good books. IM SO GLAD I STAYED!!! An amazing book and immediately purchased book 2. Three years later I am listening to them again to prepare for book 3 and I am more excited now than I was all those years ago!

slow but worth it

it was a struggle at the beginning lots of information lots of questions created all at once that took the entire book to answer but in the end I'm looking forward to the next book you literally know everything about the characters and they do exactly what you'd expect them to do by the end of the book which is a good thing in that the author built to character and helps you to understand the character for who they are and then make sure that the character is doing what you expect them to do based on that knowledge.

Many characters I can't wait to hear more of

The book follows a lot of characters, and jumps between them. This is kind of hard to follow at first but is might more satisfying later. The magic is interesting and the world mysterious and different than the real world in interesting ways. All in all, a great first book to a series I can't wait to finish.

A Masterpiece

I began this book without enthusiasm after it was recommended to me by a coworker. The series is one of my favorites. It's a great story and well written, with just the right amount of descriptive language. I was sucked in after the first few chapters. The narrator is one of the best. My only complaint are the stupid jokes and puns Shallan tells. They're used to make her sound clever, but they're ridiculously inane and sophomoric.

don't miss this series

Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive is excellent. The books are long and make for excellent commute listening. there's enough content that they stand up very well to repeated listens.

there are epic battles, political intrigue, magic, magical beings,

The characters grow significantly throughout the first two books. I found myself really casing about the characters and wishing for them to succeed and groaning when they failed.

Great Story

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Way of Kings?

I find myself yearning for more from Kaladin. The overall story is really good and I enjoyed how the separate characters stories came together and integrated with each other. The different character stories reminded me of Game of Thrones, but with fewer characters to follow it was much easier to get involved in the overall story.

What about Kate Reading and Michael Kramer ’s performance did you like?

Both Kate and Michael did a good job of telling their parts of the story. Michael was particularly enjoyable because of the different voices and ways he took the characters to a new level when portraying them.

This is the Golden Standard.

This Audio book should be the golden standard of which others are judged. Is this a perfect book? No but what holds the book and series down at times are minor specially considering the length of each book. The only negative I can tie to this is that sometimes the world is stale and the story does not move or flow evenly and the character that you are invested in the most is taking a back seat. Now while I write this I imagine other people reading this and thinking I am crazy but as I said this is a minor thing specially for a book so long.

The world is full of possibilities and I for one am hoping Sanderson does not go the way everyone else is going and Sanderson breathes mystery back to life in the world. I feel the story arc of a world of magic that is dying and the main character equipped with magic's final existence faces the forces of evil on last time over done and I for one need a break. But, even if he does the easy route this book will stand hand and shoulders above the others.

The character development is well done but the story steps up when the main characters begin to interact with each other. This is when Sanderson hits his full momentum. Though most of the main characters are like butterflies and they cocoon at the same time but it is interesting to watch them emerge and discovered their new evolution. I hope as the story goes on that the characters continue to shape and pull towards and away from others as life goes on. Most likely you will attach to a certain character but in this book it is clear who the author wants you to bond with, but the other books open it up a bit and allows a wider spot light to more characters which allows the story to either move swiftly of bog down a bit if you grow to not like a character as much as the others.

The world is worth reading the book alone. The history is much more than most books and I feel he could write a trilogy on the history he is building the story on; if not two the distant past and the most recent history that triggered current events. If I had to find a weakpoint in the world and it would be a minor one the world revolves around a small area of the world and the rest of the world is merely there and keeps to themselves but adding foreign affairs to the interplay of politics of the court could easily become overwhelming.

The plot is or appears to be well flushed out and planned with very little artificial or forced movement of the plot and everything seems to develop naturally. Plot devices are not forced and they are not written into the story because the author needed it but as vehicles to allow the characters to develop and push them forward despite themselves. There is a timeline the author puts and I am worried that it will cut the amount of exploration in the world but however the story goes I cannot wait to listen to one of the best authors of our time. Sanderson continues to develop his skills and impress those that reed his books time and time again and it is interesting to continue to follow Sanderson and witness his development. For me he is the hidden character in all of his novels and I hope he does not stop developing.
