Publisher's summary

A perilous pursuit...

Kate Love is an ambitious reporter on the trail of a swindler who has been preying on elderly Blacks. But when her investigation leads her into danger, she is snatched by Dix Wildhorse, a Black Seminole marshal from Oklahoman’s Indian country. Kate has no choice but to flee with the daring knight her father sent to rescue her. Despite the warm simmering fire Dix’s bronzed, muscled embrace ignites, she is determined to hold on to her independence, challenging him at every turn. Yet even as their battle of wills intensifies, the heat of their passion blazes with unmatched fury...a wildfire of love that can only be answered in the sweet ecstasy of surrender.

Excellent historical romantic novel

Thoroughly enjoyed this work. I learned so much about our history. It's exciting and wonderful to be part of this history as an American Black. loved Dix, Katherine, Miss Sunshine and Judge Parker.

Loved it!

I loved the book, but "Lor-ellie" drove me nuts! Let's make sure we pronounce names and words correctly.

another one

I can't seem to get enough of Beverly's story telling style. Her description of male rawness, yet honorable and skillful never ceases to entertain me.

Lor-ellie.

Couldn't get past Lor-ellie, it threw everything off. I bought Something like love also and had to check, and yes she calls her Lor-ellie in it also. Bummer 😕

Delightful

Love this book and the narrator did it justice. Have loved this book for numerous years, hearing it on audiobook didn't take away from how I have imagined the characters over 20 years.

Katherine and Dixon

I absolutely love this book. It’s got everything- forced marriage, kidnapping, murder, laughter, tears and lots of falling in love. Another brilliant pen from Me. Bev. And Kim Staunton was, as always, the perfect narrator.

Some history I did not know!

I love the historical fabric of these novels. Having had a full blooded Cherokee great-grandmother, I am reminded of just how intertwined Black of African descent and Indigenous Peoples of this land really are. I have read some accounts of the things done to our Indigenous brothers and sisters yet never had anything indepth to feast on until now. I know that this novel is a work of fiction however, it adds a history of the things that happened to our Indigenous brothers and sisters that the history books have left out. Much like the many things about our own history that has been left out of the history books. The July and WildHorse families seem to have ancestral moorings in my soul each time I hear the story. It is most disturbing how they used many members of our enslaved ancestors and our Indigenous brothers and sisters to help them to fight for their freedom from England yet they refused to give us our own freedoms. They used every trick and manner of deceit they could come up with to keep our freedoms from becoming full fledged even until this very day. Thank you Ms. Jenkins for lifting up these ancestoral remembrances for those of us who have not known. Great story and the love that is shown for the characters and our peoples warms my heart very much!
