another hit and miss

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The stories didn't go together very well.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I got this because of Branden Sanderson and for that was happy. I also like that it introduced me to Charles Stross.

Any additional comments?

This is a good way to find new authors. I enjoyed about 60% of this set of stories.

Summary has no list of individual stories/chapters

What did you like best about Tor.com: Selected Original Fiction, 2008-2012? What did you like least?

Brandon Sanderson, of course

If you’ve listened to books by the authors before, how does this one compare?

This format needs to have a way for the listener to browse inside the phone app to see what stories were on which chapters. I had to muddle through and use bookmarks. I hope other readers might suggest this to Audible.com

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I pay for the narrators, so even the finest story can be junked by a bad mouth speaker person human

Any additional comments?

Authors pay alot of money to include maps and other lists (example: Ars Arcanum in the Stormlight Archive books) the phone app needs to have a page, or links to pages that show these maps and lists/tables. I don't want to imagine the executives at audible omitting them just so the listener will buy the Hardcover book to see them. That is just evil.

An excellent compilation of shorts

This is a pleasant diversion from the nonfiction I'd been listening to and perfect for an indoor summer!

Fantastic breadth of story

Strong voices lend depth to unique and off the beaten path stories and characters. While you won't like every story there will be some you will connect with deeply, some that will surprise you, and others which will challange your established convictions on genre. Fantastic work all around. if you're looking for a taste of the Sci-fi writing frontier, take a leap!

Decent Compilation

Brandon Sanderson's story was great and John Scalzi's contribution was fantastic, but the rest of the entries were lacking something special.

Feast or Famine

I AM SURE THAT NOT HAVING A BRAIN IS FATAL.
I am not sure what the theme was for this collection. These stories cover the gambit for types of Sci-Fi, as well as quality. You will probably find a story in here that you like, but you are also certain to find some you don't like.

THERE ARE ALIEN GROUPIES?
My favorite story was After The Coup, by John Scalzi, but I had already read it, as it is part of The Human Division. Brit Mandelo wrote a really cool, yet haunting story called "The Finite Canvas" (also in Dozier's 30th annual). Scalzi had another good story called "The President's Brain is Missing". Ken MacLeod's "Earth Hour" was good and should appeal to techies. I was disappointed in Sanderson's "Firstborn". It was not bad, just not as good as what he usually writes. Charles Stross had two entries from his Laundry series. I am not a fan of British Humor, so I could not finish these long stories. Day, McCarron and Swirsky had paranormal chick lit stories that put me to sleep.

The narrators are top notch, everyone a professional.
