Publisher's summary

Tressa Middleton made UK history when she became Britain's youngest mum in 2006 aged just 12 years and eight months. Her case provoked shock and outrage - but the truth behind the headlines was far sadder than anyone could ever have imagined.

Born into a life of poverty and neglect, Tressa was forced to grow up fast when was she taken into care at just four years old. She was returned to her mother's chaotic world, but by the age of seven, she was being abused by her own brother and at 11 years old she fell pregnant with his child. For years she kept his dark secret in an attempt to hold her family together until the truth threatened to destroy her completely.

In the years since the birth, Tressa has gone through more pain and turmoil than most adults experience in a lifetime - yet today she survives a brave, strong and compassionate young woman. Now, for the first time, Tressa Middleton tells her own harrowing yet poignant story - a story of hope, forgiveness and, above all, love.

How common is incest?

I felt so sorry for all the children from this family. It seems that they didn’t stand a chance to make good decisions from the example the parents set before them the drug and alcohol abuse seemed like a normal occurrence in their homes. I just wanted to scream tell somebody when the sexual abuse began. Children fall prey to adults manipulative lies because they don’t know any better. A disturbing content

Tragedy of Birth

The tragedy of being born into such gross dysfunction.
While the language was not always appreciated, I presume it was accurately depicted.

The story is worth knowing in the sense that in general it is not unique and there is much suffering in this world.

Sad Story, Hopeful Ending!

I recommend this book if you are interested in true stories of overcoming abuse! How hard it must be for Tressa to learn to lead a normal, healthy life after such dysfunction.

Hard, but Gutsy to Share

This poor girl lived a lifetime before 12 years old. She is a true survivor and the story was well written.

Pitiful and heartbreaking

Some parents shouldn’t have ever had kids and her mom was one of them. I kept being torn about how truly heartbreaking it was that the author still loved her mother and (even though she-I guess-knew it was wrong) kept feeding into her mom’s habit and anger at her being given all those chances to stay out of that trouble and still choosing not to. Even when it meant losing everything.
She had no control over what happened to her as a kid, but I’m truly glad she’s better now. I also hope that blaming Annie’s successful adoption on the fact that her new parents had some money stops with time. Money has nothing to do with providing a loving home for a child. The poorest people (my childhood home included) had parents who cared about their kids and provided real love. Not money-or even decent clothes or food much of the time-but LOVE.
I hope she gets to get back in touch with the family she lost through adoptions etc and I hope their lives have improved as well.
The fact that her brother abused her (and knew it was wrong even then, by the way, or he wouldn’t have threatened her) and her mother never stood up for her will always hurt, but I’m glad she’s healing properly. My mom never quite healed as her mom always denied her abuse (and then died so there would never be a chance at closure) and I know how damaging that can be.
I love that she was brave enough to tell her story and hope that it can maybe help other people who haven’t come to terms with their abusive pasts.
Well done, sis ❤️
