Publisher's summary

"An outstanding debut-confident, compelling, with a surprise around every corner. I loved it." (Jane Harper, New York Times best-selling author of The Dry)

Producer Jack Quick knows how to frame a story. So says Curtis Wade, the subject of Jack's new true crime docuseries, convicted of a young woman's murder four years prior. In the eyes of Jack's viewers, flimsy evidence and police bias influenced the final verdict...even though, off screen, Jack himself has his doubts.

But when the series finale is wildly successful, a retrial sees Curtis walk free. And then another victim turns up dead.

To set things right, Jack goes back to the sleepy vineyard town where it all began, bent on discovering what really happened. Because behind the many stories he tells, the truth is Jack's last chance. He may have sprung a killer from jail, but he's also the one that can send him back.

pretty darn good

at one point or seemed as if the Who Done It question hardly mattered. the character study was much more important. but then there is a twist and who done it and why becomes central again. characters are well done and well revealed. good story.

Absolutely fantastic.

This is one of the best books I've read / heard in a long time. The characters were well developed and nuanced, and the story was a really fascinating and meandering journey. I don't agree with the reviews that indicated it was too long - I loved the way the story unfolded and how the depths of the characters were gradually revealed.

Many diversions

I listen to this book in 2 days. Not being from Australia the accents were hard to get into but the story line kept me engaged. There are many twists so I didnt predict the ending.

A Best in Mysteries

This was one of the longer books I have listened to but I could not put it down. There was a twist and turn all the way through. The characters were so real. The story so spellbinding. Highly recommend.

What a Surprise!

Got a little confused right from the start. Little kids and then a tragedy and back to now. Then they bounced back and forth. would I read it again - probably not.

So many plot twists

This is a real nail biter. So we’ll written, every single word counts. Smart, dramatic, and thoughtful.

A Nice Surprise

I've never read anything from Benjamin Stevenson. This book starts a little slow but builds into a pretty good overall read. It has some twists and turns and ends nicely. Worth my while.

nice twists

too long for too many teasing twists, but has a totally surprising ending, I assume.

is anyone innocent?

A young girl is dead, and no one seems to know anything. She is found at an estate 2 fingers in her mouth and no signs or how or any evidence where she is found. Jack begins a podcast believing that an innocent man is in jail for her murder. As soon as he succeeded in getting enough evidence to have the murderer freed. Another woman turns up dead. Things and everyone around him start to fall apart. Is he guilty? Is anyone guilty, and can anyone be trusted. You will be guessing til the last page. This is only my second book from this author, but they are going on my auto buy list now. Great storytelling keeps you guessing and has a way of getting you to second guess everyone.
