Publisher's summary

Introducing Jack West, a tenacious Houston homicide detective who believes even the dregs of society deserve justice.

After solving an exhausting murder case involving teenagers, Jack and his partner, Dawson Luck, are assigned a cold case dating back 25 years. One case: an unsolved murder of a woman found dead behind a seedy motel, the other about a missing prostitute.

Digging into the cases, a fresh murder case is called in. A wealthy couple is found dead in an affluent residential area. It appears to be a murder-suicide, and this new case takes precedence. Wrapping up the new case in record time, they get back to their cold cases.

As Jack digs in to his 36-year-old case, he hears a bizarre tale from a dying ex-prostitute. What he hears has him believing his and his partner’s cases might be connected.

Joining forces, they unravel truths about cops on the take, executions, prostitution, and conspiracy to cover up a murder involving a high-ranking official.

Review

My interpretation is the book is supposed to be intriguing and a slow burn but the narrator spoke so slowly and lacked so much emotion it felt like the book was never going to end. It felt like he was reading an essay and not a mystery novel. In addition the voices he chose for the characters were all very similar it was hard to keep track of who was talking.

Now the actual plot of this story is what got me to push through and listen until the end. There were MANY plot twists that I did not see coming and the ending took me by surprise!

Proformance

This selection would be much improved with some refinement to the performance. The reader comes across as unfamiliar with the text. This in turn throws off the punctuation of lines and emotional intent of the characters. An example would be chapter 27 where the female character has some lines of Sarcasm but the performance seems flat.
The performer also makes an effort to use different voices for the characters. However, they all sound very similar, making it difficult to envision separate characters from one person, making slight changes to his voice. This is especially true with female characters.. lastly the noise in between scenes is very distracting. These elements take way from a story that would be far more entertaining. I’m just waiting on a ride

Good Story Line

Love the story line And the twist And Turns.
The narrator did a good job but seemed a bit nervous. Needs to show more expression and not so monotone. Did not care for the gunshot sound in between each chapter.
