Publisher's summary

Ever wished a portal would open up and swallow you? Don’t. Trust me.

Slinging hotdogs may not be the most glorious side gig, but hey, if it paid for college, that’s all Emma could ask for. And let’s be real, of all the crowds in the world, what were the odds that Comic-Con would get Portalled next?

Emma really should’ve known better. Once again, the universe conspires against her, and now she’s stuck in a world where the laws of physics don’t seem to apply and even the grass is trying to kill her. She better pay close heed to the artificial intelligence guiding her and make some new friends fast, because out here, it’s thrive or die.

And no amount of video games prepared her for a world where you can actually gain skills and level up. Or to face a series of trials that seem designed to kill her rather than teach her how to survive.... What could possibly be the real goal of the mysterious "predecessors" that built them?

Good Read

The first half of the book wS extremely hard for me to get through, I realized it's important to understand everything but man I was bored! once other people got involved then the book picked up and I enjoyed it. It's no prize winner but it is a good read for in-between books.

Nice little gem ifound while perusing

I found this book mildly interesting and moderately funny . It seems to have promise and keeps me entertained just fine and dandy. I will follow through the door into the next trial.

TOTALLY WORTH IT.

I loved it so much that when I got to the last 3 hours I literally couldn't stop and accidentally went to bed st 4 am.
My only complaint is the bell twinkling sound effect of the AI's voice, I could've done without that, the robotic sound effect was enough in my opinion.

Can't wait for the next book.

Pretty Darn Good

So I started listening to this book after walking my daughter to school in the morning. On the way back, I decided to take an alternate route to keep listening a little longer. This book grabs you. Great job H.C. Mills and Madeline Thaler, love your voice.

2nd half is best

At first I didn't think I'd make it through this one. I like people interaction and the mc was alone into 20+ chapters. However, the story did pick up when people came back together.

I do like the characters. and the performance was very good. im on the fence about continuing the series. I like it, but I really was bored the first half. Cultivation, plus math, plus cultivation, one person's thoughts about Cultivation, a bit more math and cultivation..

But..the 2nd part was really good. that's all I can think of to share.

Great!!

This book is the best of the books ready player one and the hunger games. Any and all gamers would enjoy this listen. The author has a smooth writing style and never misses a beat in between the virtual speak and reality. I would definitely recommend this book to others who enjoy this genre. The narration was great.

Half the book is just explaining how the world works.

First half (20 something chapter's) is a SLOW tutorial that explains the world and how most of it works.
It could have been explained in less then 10 minutes.

When that is done MC meets more people. And even though it has been explained several times that MC is not likely to survive. And everyone else has a better change to survive. Then she keeps breaking the odds. And is the best at whatever see needs/want to do.

Good but different

Good overall, but as others mentioned heavy on the calculations. Unlike some books in this genre it's not using stat sheets as filler.

Both the test and the audio version have a problem with distinguishing between internal dialog and external imo. That's probably my biggest critique overall.

While it's not Defiance of the fall, or He Who Fights Monsters, it's not trying to be either. Worth a read imo.

Interesting take on the Isekai Genre

I thought this was an interesting take on Isekai idea/genre. I found the fact that it is a female protagonist refreshing and very positive. Definitely something I would suggest giving a read/listen.

The narrator did a fantastic job bringing this story to life and giving voice to all the different characters.
