Publisher's summary

Wildcat colonies are illegal, unauthorized, and secret - so when an injured stranger shows up at the wildcat colony New Seattle, the colony leaders are understandably suspicious of who he is and what he represents. His story of how he’s come to their colony is shocking, surprising, and might have bigger consequences than anyone could have expected.

Walk the Plank is a tale from John Scalzi's The Human Division, a series of self-contained but interrelated short stories set in the Old Man's War universe.

setting it up for future episode

Good start but it leaves you hanging, like it is supposed to. Dont know where it is going but eager for the next installment.

Short But Interesting

Any additional comments?

Even though it's less than 40 minutes long, it still had enough interest to make me feel invested in the characters and their survival.

Will this tie in with the story?

Any additional comments?

I'm assuming this will tie in with the story at one point. A different group than were in the first short. I like to read these as a pallet cleanser in between books.

What about William Dufris’s performance did you like?

YOU REALLY FELT THE PAIN - THE STORY

Any additional comments?

LEFT ONE WANTING TO KNOW THE FATE OF THE COLONY - I ASSUME THEY ALL DIED A SLOW DEATH.

Great series!

Would you consider the audio edition of Walk the Plank to be better than the print version?

I believe they are pretty equal, but as a person that does a lot of commuting on the subway I find the audio book to be more convenient. Plus I can listen to it while jogging.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Walk the Plank?

The story itself, it's only 30 minutes long and part of a larger collection of short stories.

What about William Dufris’s performance did you like?

He's a good narrator that gets the story across without seeming to hammy or boring.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yup, only 30 minutes!

Any additional comments?

Scalzi is a pretty good author for fun sci-fi. Nothing extremely academic in his writing, but I love it! Give "Old Man's War" a try and if you like it then pick up all of the human division. Better yet, just buy all of the Human Division, it's only 69 cents (for subscribers) an episode!

Heartbreaking

It’s a tale as old as time. Boy gets thrown from plane in a container, plummeting to his own doom, survives only to be attacked by vicious packs of you know whats. Then to try running for his downstream only. To be poisoned by life giving water upon which civilization shows and a fucking doctor kills him.
Yep it’s a tale as old as time

Chilling

Some reviewers complained about this short story, but I found it well written and well performed. Yes, it isn't really a stand alone story, unless you like unresolved stories (remember reading The Lottery in high school English class?), but I found myself hoping for a good ending. You find out what happened to this colony in the next installment.

Read them in order

I enjoyed the series more as I went through each episode. At first I struggled because it seemed like random stories set in this universe. But as it continued and I realized it was interwoven story lines I enjoyed them more. The main characters were enjoyable. It's pretty traditional sci fi fare but still worth the read.

Not a fan of screenplays disguised as literature!

This audiobook is not so much a book but a oral presentation of a screenplay. I was not impressed!!!
