AN INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

'Waypoints is a memoir with a difference! I wanted to tell the stories and share the experiences that have shaped me, but to do that I needed to challenge myself and spend some time in my own company, away from the distractions of everyday life. And for me there's no better place to reflect than in the wild Scottish Highlands.'

In this journey of self-discovery, Sam Heughan sets out along the West Highland Way to explore his heritage and reflect on the personal waypoints that define him. The result is a love letter to the wild Scottish landscape that means so much to Sam, and a charming, funny, wise and searching insight to the world through his eyes.

The walk itself is the backdrop for this narrative, which tells the story of Sam's life while exploring his outlook, values and interests. Sam is a figure of fascinating contrasts, a Hollywood star with deep roots in rural Scotland, he's both outgoing and content in his own company. He has strong connections with his fans while recognising the fragility and value of anonymity, and in My Peak Challenge he has created a network that brings people together as they chase individual goals. In his new book, while charting a path through a stunning wilderness, Sam maps out the moments that shaped his views on dreams and ambition, family, friendships, love and life.

Waypoints is a deeply personal journey that reveals as much to Sam about himself as it does to his listeners.

HIs Personal Challenge

Nothing better than hearing the personal voice of the author, especially from someone such as Sam with a background in theatre. I could listen to him read 24/7. His many voices are an entertaining talent and I especially loved the voice he used when talking to the mushrooms. Wonderful sense of humour. His many quotes from numerous plays gave me the shivers and I loved his rendition of Romeo. Sam’s honest reflections about a life full of personal challenges is a great testimony to the man behind the acting mask and he has been immensely courageous in sharing his fatherless upbringing with us, and what a loving and insightful mum he has to recognise that he needed more and to enrol him in a Rudolph Steiner school. Thank you for giving us insight into what makes you the great actor that you are as well as the real generous and loving soul too. Not many would go back with food for the homeless person that you met along the way. Such a generous spirit will surely not go unrewarded in their life, and as you realise timing is everything - that special someone is just waiting in the wings. You just have to slow down enough to see them. But you already know this! All the best with whatever next venture you have on your long list Sam.

Sam's Waypoints

Moving. So touching, Sam's courage to share emotions about his father. I got his underlying feeling of embarrassment as a child and even as an adult....guilt even. Such a deep trauma. Such a very sad reconnection at his father's last days. Loved his openess about his experiences as a boy at school, a young student and wild times. You are you Sam and nobody else. I wish you only the love of your own home made family and taking time to yourself. So enjoyed your book and your own narration. Only missed a PDF with photos in the hardback.

A true gem

When I decided to read this book I didn't, in my wildest dreams, suspect that it would be one of the best books I've ever read/listened to. I knew it had high notes, but I was affraid it might be, at least in part, due to the somewhat biased fandom. It isn't. This book and Sam's delivery is a true gem, a literary treat, spectacularly narrated, gripping, emotional and thought-provoking. It's also funny (I could be often spotted roaming the streets with headphones in my ears and a broad grin on my face).

I've read several memoirs so far (4 or 5 maybe), but this book is something more. It reads as an adventure, reflexive novel. The language is amazing, the events, people and views are brought to life with a rare talent of making everything appear in the reader's head as though we experienced it together with the author.

Sam also has a genius ability to pick seemingly inconsequential events and turn them into the foundation of very essential narrative of his life story. And he tells these events with wit, insight, humor and honesty. He doesn't shy even from reaviling his rather curious relationship with certain representatives of Scottish flora :D

Sam's narration brings his memoir to yet a higher level. He lives the story. He laughs, whispers, yells, offers interjections. He invites us to thread the road with him. I felt as if someone who I was beginning to form a friendship with was telling me his life story. It was intimate in that sense.

As his fan, I am deeply grateful he allowed me to glimpse some part of who Sam Heughan is. And I admire him that much more for both doing exactly that and for the person he once again reveals himself to be.
