Rumors and Gossip . . . The lifeblood of London

When Olivia Bevelstoke is told that her new neighbor may have killed his fiancée, she doesn't believe it for a second, but, still, how can she help spying on him, just to be sure? So she stakes out a spot near her bedroom window, cleverly concealed by curtains, watches, and waits . . . and discovers a most intriguing man, who is definitely up to something. Sir Harry Valentine works for the boring branch of the War Office, translating documents vital to national security.

He's not a spy, but he's had all the training, and when a gorgeous blonde begins to watch him from her window, he is instantly suspicious. But just when he decides that she's nothing more than an annoyingly nosy debutante, he discovers that she might be engaged to a foreign prince, who might be plotting against England. And when Harry is roped into spying on Olivia, he discovers that he might be falling for her himself . . .

One of her best!

Excellent in every way! I would highly recommend it! I love both characters and the cuteness of their courtship between their windows is charming.

Delightful!

Love, love, love the story, characters and the narration. Some of the dialogue between the characters was laugh out loud funny.

Probably my most favorite

It’s my third time listening. Love the characters, the wit and the engaging story-telling voice of Rosalyn Landor!

Better than I Expected!

By this point, I do realized I'm not a huge Julia Quinn fan. I've tried! I've been a dedicated romance reader since I was a teen and accidentally read my first Lisa Kleypas book and stole that book from the library. (It was being sold for a dollar and I did not have a dollar). Point being, I have read from other authors, I have read all of the Bridgerton main series (and hated most of it), I have tried and tried,,, and I think this will be the last book I will probably read from Julia Quinn.

The funny part is that this book wasn't bad! It was funny and charming, I love Olivia since the last book, I love Harry! They were great. Their ending... wasn't good. It felt rush and stilted. Like we've grown to care for these characters and you're telling me the issues were resolved in a matter of hours and maybe a day? Listen, if we had to go through Miranda and Turner's miserable love story, then why was it so difficult to write more for Harry and Olivia... who at the very least liked each other as people. Having read Bridgerton, I can tell when there is a lack of care when two main characters are simply nice people. Like if all you can write is messed up characters and who shouldn't even be together in the first place then I'm done. There's no point in trying to force myself to care about these characters/story when the author feels like she doesn't either.

A pleasure to listen to....

What a pleasure to listen to this warm, and whimsical romance of Harry and Olivia. The allure of Harry's work with the war department, his skill in language and Olivia's beauty and intelligence come alive with Rosalyn Landor's excellent narration. The secondary characters were just as well portrayed. This romance confirms why I love spending valuable time amercing myself in a Julia Quinn novel.

What Happened in the Story

There is nothing overly objectionable about the story. It's just a snore-fest; which is surprising because the author includes several elements that should be, on the surface, exciting. If you're looking for a plodding, but adequate story, this serves well enough. It lacks sparkle and grows tedious at times, but many regencies do. My main problem is that the author had so much to work with; yet somehow, she managed to wring every ounce of excitement from the story, only to replace it with monotony.

Not quite as good as other Julia Quinn books.

What did you like best about What Happens in London? What did you like least?

Olivia's character was sweet and witty. Harry's family background was very dark and grim and it did not seem to really have any bearing on the story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The book within the book seemed a bit silly and was given too much emphasis.

What about Rosalyn Landor’s performance did you like?

The reading was great and well performed.

Was What Happens in London worth the listening time?

Mostly.

Any additional comments?

It was very long winded. The essence of the story was good though.

A little laughter a little suspense and a little real life romance. Enjoyable reading. I recommend this little series.

This one sparkles with wit!

I have read many of Ms.Quinns’ novels but this one is exceptional —- I didn’t want to stop listening for anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary! The banter between Olivia and Harry was sharp, funny, and irresistible. Highly recommended!!
