Epic beautiful story

This book will definitely become more viral, since it’s like fourth wing and ToG had a love child with a dusting of savage lands. It’s got so much emotional depth, action, tremendous hardships, beauty, such fury, and unique characters and an even more unique world. Oof, this story has all the feels, laughing, crying, profound character building and development, all of it. In the beginning, I was a bit confused but the story ends up working best that way by not bogging down the book with monotonous world building. The story really comes together but with so many twists and turns. Some details were very surprising, yet you end the book with a handful more questions too. But in a good way. I like how this was a love story but so different because you are recounting history and the present while threading them together. All the characters have a lot of depth and wit, with sound reasoning for their actions (maybe not always agreeable though) Ima be in a book rut after this one, and cannot wait for the next.!

I don’t get the hype

I had to increase speed to get through it, I feel confused about the ending & the general story. Is it a series?
I don’t feel like there was enough world building and character development. I felt lost for the entire story…but maybe that was the point? Not for me, but it seems to have been good for a lot of people - so check it out! It might be what you’re looking for.

This book has WAY more potential than it gave. I hardly even know what the plot is anymore... And it ended on a cliff hanger 🙄

The positives:
Loved the characters (the narrators especially were really good on audible).

Loved the banter.

Loved the magic systems/mythical creature usage.


The negatives:
I wish there was some sort of encyclopedia of all the things of this book bc holy crap was I confused for so long.

Normally I'm a very mentally visual person when reading but it was so hard to visualize a lot from this book bc I felt like nothing was explained that well or described enough.

I also feel like I have no clue the time frame anymore. It felt like cut scenes.

The story lacked luster which is so disappointing bc it could have been amazing.

I feel like we spent 80% of this book obsessing over this one bad guy, or this one issue and did very little about either of them. And then the memory stuff? Far too casual with it. It's like the author forgot this was a thing, and then was like "Oh ya let me just play it off like they're all on the same page with this stuff now"....?.... 🙄



Ugh idk, I'm frustrated. I was excited for this one, and it started off with suuuuuuch promise (despite having to figure out WTF they meant with the new words, phrases or creatures) and it just really fell short for me.

Bummer.

Audiobook made this bareable

I had high hopes for this book.
I attempted it without the audiobook and had no idea what was going on for the first 20ish chapters. If it weren’t for the audiobook, this would have been my first to ever not finish.

New and different world

I was surprised by this book. I bought by mistake, but I am glad I did. When is the next one?

Kept me enthralled from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this book. Looking forward to the second one. Good story, action, adventure and spice. I also enjoyed the narrators.

When can I read the second book!?

This was so damn good! I didn’t personally like the voice for the male roles but it wasn’t too off putting that it made me not listen. I listened to the book twice in a row just to get all the details, but I can’t wait for the next book omg!

Most creative and well written book I’ve read in a while

Wow this was SUCH a breath of fresh air. I absolutely loved it. (literally the only one criticism is that she used the word ‘slit’) The writing is so top notch. I was fully immersed in the story within the first chapter. The characters were all so realistic and had excellent development. Their choices made perfect sense and were honest for the characters. Their attitudes made perfect sense too. The 2 narrators were perfect for each character and going back and forth from one male chapter to a female chapter etc didn’t jar me at all.
I was so glad for the male characters perspective and felt it added so much to the story.
I had expected this to be a stand alone novel and am now pleased it is not.
I so look forward to the next book!!!! I think I’ll listen to it again immediately.

Soooo good

It took me a little bit to get everything down, there's a LOT of substance to this book and I'll definitely be doing a re read but WOW so good! Not like every fantasy book out there, so different and worth the read!

Not for me (spoiler free review)

This book has a slow start and doesn't really go anywhere once it picks up (after chapter 20 or so). I struggled to care about the characters as I believe they lacked depth aside from their singular obsessions. I felt like the story jumped from one moment to another within each chapter without proper transitions which left me constantly wondering if I missed something. The writing style is meant to keep the reader guessing, I think, but I found it flawed as I constantly needed both more information and less information without a satisfying payoff to make it worth it.

I'm not usually opposed to a slow build in a book, but this one just wasn't worth it to me.
