Publisher's summary

From the internationally best-selling author of The Gilded Hour comes Sara Donati's enthralling epic about two trailblazing female doctors in 19th-century New York.

Obstetrician Dr. Sophie Savard returns home to the achingly familiar rhythms of Manhattan in the early spring of 1884 to rebuild her life after the death of her husband. With the help of Dr. Anna Savard, her dearest friend, cousin, and fellow physician she plans to continue her work aiding the disadvantaged women society would rather forget.

As Sophie sets out to construct a new life for herself, Anna's husband, Detective Sergeant Jack Mezzanotte calls on them both to consult on two new cases: the wife of a prominent banker has disappeared into thin air, and the corpse of a young woman is found with baffling wounds that suggest a killer is on the loose. In New York it seems that the advancement of women has brought out the worst in some men. Unable to ignore the plight of New York's less fortunate, these intrepid cousins draw on all resources to protect their patients.

Wonderful world brought to life!

I’ve loved all of Donati’s books, but I didn’t discover them until long after they were written so this is my first that I had to wait for patiently. It was completely worth it. The characters are the kind you can’t wait to curl up with any chance you get. I’m looking forward to going back and listening again to stories of Aunt Quinlan’s early life, and wonder if there’s a chunk of time between then and the gilded hour that needs to become a book?

What a fabulously complex story!

I have listened to most of what Sara Donati has written, and Kate Reading, her reader for this novel, is also a perennial favorite. Such talent combined for fabulous fun!

Treat yourself to the unfoldment of old, treasured characters and be delighted by new ones, even down to the dog, Pip.

Captivating Novel

I love this story. Sarah is such a wonderful story teller. I sit for lost in the tale of these remarkable families. Unable to remember that this a novel . not real. The women of this era truly are my hero's. they overcame so many obstacles to become physicians. As did the household help of the time. refreshing to see that attitudes was not shared by these remarkable families. enjoy this remarkable story.

💜 Absolutely phenomenal

I am so confused as to the reviews for this book that are unfavorable. This was an absolutely amazing installment in this series and Kate Reading did a find job. I did have to speed her up because she was sssoooo ssssllloooowww, but once I did it was very cohesive.

Yes, I too absolutely hate having different narrators in a series. However, this series is so well written that I knew I would continue on despite that. So, what I did was to put a huge gap between listening to The Gilded Hour and Where the Light Enters. Nine months actually. So for me, the different narrator wasn’t an issue because I didn’t have the previous voices in my mind, but the story was still close enough to be recalled. I would highly recommend anyone to do the same because the story is totally worth it.

This is an ongoing story in a series. So we don’t always get neatly tied up answers. We did get pretty much the closure we were looking for from the last book, and definitely some teasers that make us anxiously anticipate the next one. (Little Birds, which is supposed to be a bridge between The Wilderness series and this series)

I feel like anyone who has read a Sara Donati book HAS to know to expect a thoroughly written story! If you’re not a fan of very detailed books then 26 hour books probably aren’t for you.

I am pretty sure I got this in a 2 for 1 sale, however if I had used a whole credit on it I would not have been disappointed. And I’m really picky about what I spend whole credits on.

A Murder Mystery/Historical Fiction/ Romance

I have listened to the entire Wilderness series, and the 2 books in the Guilded Era series thus far. They are all exiting and engaging in their own right.
This latest edition does not disappoint!
I love the twists in the murder investigation, and the development of all the characters, especially the Savvard women and the Russo girls. Their tenacity, strength and empathy for those less fortunate are inspirational! There were some unexpected twists, with a satisfying conclusion that leaves plenty of room for more story telling....
I am so glad I was able to listen to so many of the books in sequence without waiting. I am greatly looking forward to the next book in the series. And, may I suggest a TV series should be made from these books, which would be as equally enthralling as the Outlander series if done as well.
Thank you Ms. Donati and Ms. Redding for a fantastic effort!

A great continuation of a fabulous story!

More of the same with engaging characters and vivid mental pictures of a time long past. The medical history is particularly fascinating for me. I wish there were more!
