「人間失格」は、「恥の多い生涯を送って来ました。」という告白で始まる人間を恐れる男の手記。子どもの頃から、人間を恐れる一方で求愛するがために、道化となり人を笑わせる。長じて、女性に好かれる天性があることを悟り、女道楽に耽り心中未遂も起こす。実家から縁を切られた「私」は、編集者の女との同棲、荒れた飲酒などの日々の後、人を疑うことを知らない処女のヨシ子に惹かれて結婚。しかし、彼女が出入りの商人に汚され、「私」は荒れて薬物中毒となり、遂に脳病院に入れられてしまった。人間失格・・・。しかし、それでも、ある女性は彼のことを、「とても素直で気がきいて、神様みたいないい子でした。」と語るのだった。
「日の出前」は、実際にあった殺人事件をもとに書かれた小説で、昭和十七年に「花火」という題名で発表されたが、検閲で全文削除された。戦後に改題して刊行。高名な画家の息子が、非行に走り凶暴化していく。チベットで事業をやるなどと非現実的なことをいい、金や妹の着物、親の作品を持ちだして売り払う、家族を脅し、女中を犯す、無頼の作家や左翼の活動家とつきあう。一家は疲弊しきった。そんなある月夜の晩、泥酔した息子と一緒に、井の頭公園でボートに乗った父親が、一人だけで岸に戻ってきた…。最後の妹の言葉が衝撃的である。
「水仙」は、画家としての自らの才能を確信してしまった夫人の悲劇を描く。太宰が引いているように、菊池寛「忠直卿行状記」をベースとしている感がある。実家の破産を恥辱に感じ心を閉ざしていく静子夫人に、夫は絵を画くことを勧める。意外にもその画は周囲から称賛をあび、夫は「お前は天才かもしれぬ」とまで言う。夫人もまたその才能を確信し、遂には出奔。若い学生らにちやほやされ、芸術家気分で太宰に画を見せにきたところ、面罵されて初めて自分の愚かさに気が付く。自信を失った夫人は自暴自棄となり、やがて夫の元に戻るものの、最後は失意のうちに自殺してしまう。
「おさん」は、女性の独白物のひとつ。「私」が子供と疎開していた間に、夫は愛人を作っていた。煩悶する夫はいつもそっと抜け出す。とうに気が付いていた「私」は、夫とのささやかな会話に小さなつかの間の幸福を感じる。やがて、夫は旅に出ると言いだし、予感どおり愛人と心中。遺書には、自己嫌悪から自ら十字架にのぼる革命家であるかのように書いていることに、「私」はあきれ果てる。「気の持ち方を、軽くくるりと変えるのが真の革命」で、自分の妻に対する気持一つ変える事が出来ず、何が革命かと心で非難しながら、後始末に向かうのだった。
