自分が中学の四年生だった時の話である。
その年の秋、日光から足尾へかけて、三泊の修学旅行があった。
「午前六時三十分上野停車場前集合、同五十分発車」こう云う箇条が、学校から渡す謄写版の刷物に書いてある。
当日になると自分は、碌に朝飯も食わずに家をとび出した。電車でゆけば停車場まで二十分とはかからない。
――そう思いながらも、何となく心がせく。停車場の赤い柱の前に立って、電車を待っているうちも、気が気でない。
生憎、空は曇っている。方々の工場で鳴らす汽笛の音が、鼠色の水蒸気をふるわせたら、
それが皆霧雨になって、降って来はしないかとも思われる。その退屈な空の下で、高架鉄道を汽車が通る。
被服廠へ通う荷馬車が通る。店の戸が一つずつ開く。自分のいる停車場にも、もう二三人、人が立った。
それが皆、眠の足りなそうな顔を、陰気らしく片づけている。寒い。
――そこへ割引の電車が来た。こみ合っている中を、やっと吊皮にぶらさがると、誰か後から、
自分の肩をたたく者がある。自分は慌ててふり向いた。
「お早う。」
見ると、能勢五十雄であった
芥川 龍之介
(1892年〈明治25年〉3月1日 -1927年〈昭和2年〉7月24日)
代々江戸城の茶室を管理し、将軍や大名に茶の接待をする「奥坊主」と呼ばれる職を務めた家柄に育ち、文芸や芸事への興味・関心を早くから持っていた芥川龍之介。
才気にあふれ、世話好きな性格は周りの人々を惹きつけ、たくさん悩みながらもよく笑い、よくしゃべる人だったそうです。
そんな芥川は、東京帝国大学に入学した翌年、高校の同級だった久米正雄らと共に第三次「新思潮」を創刊し、小説や翻訳を発表しました。
次いで第四次「新思潮」を創刊の際に掲載した『鼻』が夏目漱石に認められ、文壇に登ることとなりました。
その後新聞社に入社し、記者としてではなく専業作家として意欲的に執筆活動を続けました。
芥川は、漱石や森鴎外から文体や表現の影響を受けたり、キリシタンもの、江戸を舞台にしたものなど題材に応じて文体を変えたりと、意識的な小説の書き方をしていました。
また、鈴木三重吉により創刊された児童雑誌「赤い鳥」には、初となる童話作品『蜘蛛の糸』を発表、その後も同雑誌を中心に童話作品を相次いで発表し、幅広く作品を世に残しています。
