• Offshore Wind Deep Dive
    Jul 13 2023

Did you know that offshore wind - at around 50% cheaper than gas to produce electricity - is one of the most cost-effective sources of energy? So the more wind power we have, the bigger the impact it can have.

This week’s Energy Pod takes a deep dive into this topic, and specifically the impact that meeting the UK’s ambitious offshore wind targets – to increase capacity from 13.7GW to 50GW (265%) by 2050 - could have on UK energy costs.

ABB’s wind experts, Per-Erik Holsten and Simon Wynne, discuss how realistic meeting these targets is and what needs to be done to make this happen.  If we get it right, offshore wind could play a big role in boosting the country’s energy security and powering every home in Britain with green electricity.

  • Tackling the global water crisis
    Jun 26 2023

This week’s Energy Pod takes you back to World Water Day 2023, in March, when the United Nations (UN) launched a new water action agenda to highlight the continued urgency of our water crisis and report on progress made against their sustainable development goals. Featuring highlights from ABB’s Decoded podcast, it serves as a reality check of what needs to be done to meet the UN goals, with ABB research showing that wastewater treatment capacity needs to increase annually by 8.56 billion cubic meters – which means investment in an additional 469 treatment facilities per year.

Two specialists from ABB discuss the water scarcity crisis - in which 2.2 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water, more than 4.2 billion people lack safely managed sanitation, and a staggering 80 percent of wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused - and how technology can help solve it.

Tune in to hear why addressing this crisis is more important than ever, and more specifically, how wastewater treatment can play a part in addressing global water scarcity.

  • Calling the net zero workforce to play a part in the energy transition
    May 12 2023

Last month President, ABB Energy Industries, Brandon Spencer, spoke to the Energy Terminal founders Michael Wood and Hope Pratt about why the industry urgently needs young sustainability professionals to get involved and help drive the decarbonization of emissions-intensive industries. When you think about sustainability, you might not think about industries like chemicals, industrials, and oil and gas, but for sustainability-focused professionals, these sectors hold some of the biggest opportunities to make a massive impact.

Tune in to hear the highlights of Brandon’s interview and his advice to young professionals who want to walk the walk when it comes to making a difference in the energy transition. He also discusses how new technologies are increasingly driving industry decarbonization, and creating huge career growth opportunities as a result.

Energy Terminal is a media platform with the mission to build the next generation of energy leaders.

  • Exclusive preview: ABB’s Ransom-Aware OT Defense Summit
    Apr 5 2023

This week we’re delighted to kick off Season Two of ABB Energy Pod with an exclusive preview of our upcoming OT Cybersecurity Leaders Virtual Summit which is taking place at 2pm on Wed 19th April, in partnership with Industry IoT.

In today’s episode ABB’s Patrik Boo speaks to keynote speaker Derek Harp, Founder & Chairman of the Control System Cyber Security Association International, to get the inside track on what he will be revealing during his talk on “Looming Threats: Changes and Challenges in Today’s OT Security Environments”.

Derek will be joined at the Summit by fellow esteemed speakers and industry leaders from IBM, Cisco, Boston Consulting Group, Johnson Matthey and BASF, to name a few, who will be tackling everything to do with industrial cyber-security and how to reduce the risk of being a victim. Being on the receiving end of a ransomware attack is one of the biggest concerns to business leaders, but you can be prepared. Unfortunately, nowadays everyone is a target of ransomware and it’s no longer a case of if you’ll get attacked, but when.

Tune in for an exclusive preview. For listeners interested in attending the Summit, please register at

  • Role of automation in creating sustainable materials and processes
    Nov 7 2022

In today’s Energy Pod, Scott McKay discusses how ABB is working with NatureWorks to help accelerate the shift away from plastic and towards more sustainable materials, specifically bioplastics - plastics that are made from a renewable resource and can break down naturally.

NatureWorks is developing a new facility in Thailand that will use sugarcane as a feedstock to produce 75,000 tons of sustainable plastic per year when fully operational. ABB’s technology will help improve energy and production efficiency of bioplastic manufacturing, expected to grow over 260 percent by 2026.

With approximately 350m tons of plastic churned out globally each year, the need to switch is critical to enabling and accelerating the energy transition.
