Despite feeling welcomed and at home, the narrator was reminded of her family, particularly her mother, and felt compelled to return to her body. Upon reentering her body, she felt the physical sensations of needing air and surfaced from the water. It took Susan many years to share this experience, fearing parental disapproval for swimming unsupervised. Additionally, the presence of her grandmother's spirit puzzled her, as she was alive and living far away at the time of the experience.
