    About Douglas Haynes

With 10+ years of experience as a leader and advocate for organizational change and innovation in higher education, Douglas dedicated his career to building environments of inclusive excellence for all people. As Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Academic Programs in the University of California Office of the President, he provides vision and leadership in stewarding the career experience and success of nearly 75,000 academic appointees who advance the research, teaching and service of the leading public research university in the United States. In this role, he also has the privilege of overseeing a remarkable array of unparalleled systemwide programs. These include UC Press, UC California Digital Library, UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, UC Sacramento Center and UC Washington, DC Center.

Previously, Douglas served as the inaugural Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of California, Irvine. He led efforts to build and sustain support for key principles – expect equity, support diversity, practice inclusion and promote free speech. His experience in the field enabled him to develop a broad portfolio of skills in strategic planning, customizing interventions and engaging stakeholders to be agents for change.

In his time at UCI, he made exceptional strides to promote inclusion and celebrate diversity. Major accomplishments include launching multiple enterprise-wide programs to sustain an inclusive campus climate, securing grants to support the success of a diverse student body and increasing female and minority representation in the professoriate and knowledge workforce.

In the meantime, Douglas has continued his career as a researcher and professor of history. He was a founding member of UCI’s Department of African American Studies in 1996, and he continues to educate students in that field today. His research focuses on medicine, science and technology in Europe and the U.S. in the 19th and 20th centuries. This work has led to the publication of two books, many peer journal articles and chapters. His passion for wellness led to the establishment of the UCI Center for Medical Humanities to advance the multi-disciplinary understanding of health, healing and well-being. Douglas oversaw this program as the inaugural Senior Faculty Director.
