  • October 6, 1958 - A Very Slow News Day Part 2
    Jul 22 2024

The front page of the October 5, 1958 edition of the Humboldt Times in Eureka, CA featured a photograph of a respectable looking gentleman holding a plaster cast of a 16 inch footprint, one of many the gentleman in question, one Jerry Crew, had found at his job site near Bluff Creek in northern CA. The accompanying front page article related, among other things, how the road construction crew had taken to calling the maker of those footprints bigfoot. The Associate Press Wire service picked up the story and on Monday, October 6, the story went nationwide. Yes, fellow babies, October 6, 1958 has gone down in history as the very slow news day on which bigfoot entered American culture. This episode is part 2 of our in-depth look at the events leading up to the publication and the aftermath of the publication.
