  • Episode 009 - Mindfully Freaking Out
    Jun 30 2020

    Stress, mindfulness, eco-anxiety, oh my!

With global temperatures rising along with sea levels while our thresholds for nonsense continue to lower, it is understandable that humanity might be a little freaking stressed out right about now.

But what part does stress play in our responses to disaster and climate change? And how does the kind of hippy-dippy sounding concept of mindfulness enter into the picture?

That’s what we’re discussing this week on Globally Heated!

  • Episode 008 - Why Climate Change Is So Hard To Address...Psychologically
    Jun 23 2020

With things like melting ice caps, rising sea levels, increasing frequency and strength of natural disasters, crazy plagues, faster-melting margaritas, a blight of balminess, and above all, unseasonably warm weather, why are there so many people out there that don’t believe climate change is real?!

Well, as easy as it would be to say that corporate greed and anti-science hacks are just out for themselves, that isn’t quite the whole story.

This week we’re discussing why climate change is such a difficult topic for humans as a whole to get our minds around and take action on, specifically from a psychological perspective!

  • Episode 007 - The Blame Game: Parcheesi or Stratego?
    Jun 16 2020

These days, it’s easy to get upset at all the issues with the coronavirus response, and for good reason. But when we start lashing out and casting blame in broad strokes, we oversimplify things—and this can actually do more harm than good.

So, when we play the Blame Game, are we playing smart Stratego, or are we just painting with a broad brush and playing simple Parcheesi. Wow, that’s a lot of mixed metaphors.

Today, we’ll get into how to look critically, and with nuance, at disaster response in this episode of Globally Heated!

Be sure to also check out our Cool-It Toolkit page for more on how to implement solutions to all the issues we discuss.

Also, send us your stories and thoughts on hygiene and safety education in the world of COVID-19, @globallyheated

  • Episode 006 - The Red and The Lines
    Jun 11 2020

Redlining. What a strange term evoking an antiquated way of thinking, or, on the other hand, evoking nothing, because you have no idea what it is.

But what the heck does redlining have to do with disaster and climate anyway?

Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly, as it may be for some), redlining and disinvestment have had serious consequences for the severity and frequency of disasters, as well as the disproportionate impacts of climate change, experienced by communities of color across the United States.

The what and the why are what we’re getting into this week, on Globally Heated!

Content warning: Given recent police killings and ongoing violence perpetrated by law enforcement around the country, we want to let you know ahead of time that this episode includes a discussion of racism, systematic discrimination, and institutionalized inequity. If you're not in a space to listen to that right now, that's completely understandable. We hope everyone is doing what they need to do to stay as safe and healthy as possible right now.

  • Announcement: We Stand With You
    Jun 5 2020

The past week or so has been heavy. The killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, along with all those who have lost their lives to police violence, have made us recognize a need to spotlight voices other than our own.

If you follow our blog (GloballyHeated.com) and our social media (@globallyheated on Twitter and Instagram) for the next week or so, we will be posting podcast episodes and information that have been helpful in our own efforts to educate ourselves, and spotlighting the voices that really need to be heard right now.

We stand with you in demanding justice and change. There is no simple solution, so let’s embrace the complexity as a chance to discover, to challenge ourselves to develop deeper solutions, to listen to and create space for everyone, and to move forward together.

Follow this link (courtesy of @botanicaldyke) to find ways you can help, whether that be through donations, protesting, or working behind the scenes to make a difference.

We will support however we can.

    Stay safe out there, folks.

  • Episode 005 - The Inequality Equation
    May 28 2020

Disasters make everyone equal, right? Climate change affects everyone the same way? There are no advantages or disadvantages or, well, you know, it’s all disadvantages… disadvantages for everyone!

Yeah... no. It’s the exact opposite.

In this episode, we’re diving into how disaster and climate change have an even greater impact on communities that are already struggling because of current and historical practices of their governments and societies - and how we can all engage with our communities to help mitigate, or get help mitigating, these heightened impacts. We’ll be walking through a few of the intersections of law, climate, inequity, and disasters to see how income inequity plays into the preparedness, response, and recovery space.

And Sam might get a little excited, this is one of her favorite subjects, so prepare yourselves for this week's episode of Globally Heated!

  • Episode 004 - Prepare to... practice!
    May 21 2020

Here we go again... the globe is still warming up, those ice caps are still melting like popsicles in the microwave... you all know the drill by now! Let’s keep this conversation about disasters and emergencies going, folks!

This episode, we’re bringing it all together, all the plans and supplies and research, to practice what you’ve preached so you’ll know exactly what to do when disaster strikes or emergency… harkens?

This week, we’re bringing it all together! You’ve made a plan, you’ve gathered supplies, now you get to practice, practice, practice!

The point of practice is to figure out problems ahead of time. You want to be able to think through what things may have changed or may be different with the current disaster or emergency situation, without needing to think through every single thing you need to do - you’ve practiced, you already know what to do, if something has changed, all you have to do is slightly course-correct.

So join us for some strategies, some ideas, and some thoughts to take away in this episode of Globally Heated!

    Let’s get practicing!
