He then illustrates how AI is making a huge influence on editorial, production, and other publishing processes, meanwhile explaining why this impact is going to be more intersected and profound. Subsequently, he talks about his new research – Book Publishing Startups in the U.S. 2022, a report charts how more than 1,300 publishing ventures have performed over the past 15 years, which data is included, and how to use this rich resource on publishing innovation. Since 1933, the Book Manufacturers’ Institute (BMI) has been the nationally recognized trade association representing the book manufacturing industry in the United States. This time, on the 90th anniversary of BMI, we are joined by its Executive Director Matt Baehr.

Matt talks about his professional experience working for four trade associations in four different industries and reflects on the evolution and growth of BMI along the way. He then answers our question about “print vs digital” by analyzing how people’s reading habit has changed over the pandemic and how the book manufacturing industry navigates the trend of e-reading around. Matt also shares with us how the association provides knowledge, education, human, and social support to its members and the book manufacturing community as a whole.
