  • Controversies in the Use of Medications, Herbs, and Early DBS for Parkinson's
    Apr 2 2024

Movement disorders neurologists Dr. Paarth Shah and Dr. Virgilio Gerald Evidente will be discussing in a panel discussion type of seminar the controversial issues regarding managing Parkinson’s at different stages.

The duo will discuss among others the following: (1) Should levodopa be started early or late in PD?; (2) Should elderly patients be put on dopamine agonists?; (3) How strong is the evidence for efficacy of supplements for PD?; (4) Are natural sources of levodopa better than synthetic levodopa pills?; (5) Can cannabis help PD symptoms and is it safe for PD?; (6) Should deep brain stimulation (DBS) be offered earlier in PD rather than later? If so, how early?

  • Stem Cell & Gene Therapy for Parkinson's & Other Movement Disorders: How Close Are We to a Cure? Part II
    Dec 22 2023

Presented by our moderator, Dr. Virgilio Gerald H. Evidente

This lecture discusses the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease, meaning how and why the pathology occurs.

We also went into great details regarding the cell and gene therapies presently being employed in subjects with PD as well as new strategies that are close to entering the clinical pipeline. With regards to the former, both embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells are currently being tested for the safety and tolerability of this approach and efficacy trials are being planned following these safety trials assuming they are successful. With regards to gene therapies, both symptomatic and disease modifying trials was discussed.
