  • Episode 9: Paralympics legend Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson discusses disability issues, determination and assisted dying legislation
    Jul 26 2024

It’s Friday again, and time for another exciting episode of Nothing but a Number, where I explore age and ageing with remarkable guests from politics, public life, and beyond, breaking down ageist myths and misconceptions.

This week I am thrilled to speak with Baroness Grey-Thompson of Eaglescliffe, one of Britain’s greatest Paralympic athletes and a prominent figure in the House of Lords.

Tanni retired from her Paralympic career at 37, considered old in the sporting world, only to be seen as young when she transitioned to the House of Lords. Her journey from a pioneering athlete to a powerful voice in social justice is inspiring. Her parents fought for her right to mainstream education, and her legacy includes being the first disabled person to present the Olympics.

In this episode, we discuss the distinction between what can be changed by legislation versus education, the role and importance of the House of Lords, and delve into the assisted dying debate and how to talk about death. We also explore the health of the nation, lifestyles, and the importance of sports in education.

Please tune in and I would love to hear from you, so please do get in touch or comment to share your thoughts!

    Jul 19 2024

In this week’s episode of Nothing but a Number, I am delighted to speak with Matthew Bridger, a young entrepreneur, who provides a different perspective on age and ageing better.

With many new young MPs in parliament, it is a timely moment to explore the importance of experience over age in electing our representatives. Matthew shares his views on how young people are valued in society and what more we can do to encourage intergenerational collaboration. We also discuss the belief young people have in themselves, views on voting at 16, and how to engage young people in valuing democracy.

Tune in to hear about Matthew’s entrepreneurial journey, his interest in public service, and the benefits he has gained from older influences in his life.

  • Episode 7: Insights from the Former Deputy Speaker: The Rt Hon Nigel Evans Reflects on Three Decades in Politics
    Jul 12 2024

This week I have been delighted to speak with The Rt Hon Nigel Evans, a distinguished politician with a career spanning over three decades. Nigel served as the Member of Parliament for Ribble Valley in Lancashire from 1992 until just last week.

His extensive political career included Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, frontbench spokesman, member of various select committees, but he is probably best known as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

Whilst the full impact of the election results is still fresh in everyone’s thoughts, Nigel offers advice for the newbies at Westminster, whilst reflecting on the value of experience in politics.
