• How can parents best support their child's Speech and Language Pathologist? A Guest Speaker Episode with Danielle Moore, Clinical Director at The Language Group
    Jun 17 2024

In this episode of our podcast, we are thrilled to welcome a special guest, seasoned Speech and Language Pathologist Danielle Moore of The Language Group in Atlanta, GA.

As parent coaches, we are here to support parents, and we believe it’s crucial to let the experts who work directly with the kids highlight what parents need to address themselves to get the most out of the experts’ support.

Our conversation will be unedited and honest and delve into the heart of their role, challenging assumptions and misconceptions that parents (and teachers) often hold. We’ll explore who they serve and our guest will share their experiences and observations about the common attitudes or patterns they’ve noticed when parents first approach them.

We’ll discuss the misconceptions parents often have about their child’s situation and how parental expectations can impact the work with the child. Our guest will share insights on how parents can fully accept their child’s current situation unconditionally and how to demystify the parental expectation of the ‘Linear Path of Success’.

We’ll also touch on what an “ideal” parent might do, say, and address within themselves to ensure their child gets the most out of the services provided. Our guest will also share their perspective on the support available for parents and what professionals in the field wish parents would address.

Tune in for an engaging and informative discussion!

  • The emotional rollercoaster of parenting a child with learning differences
    Jun 10 2024

Last week we talked about how emotional parenting can be! And when our children's’ path is not linear from A to B we can easily descend into feelings of frustration and anxiety. It makes sense that if our kids get a diagnosis of a learning difference or are neurodiverse these feelings for us get amplified.

As parents we are rarely the experts in child development and psychiatry - we don't know what it means for them or for us in terms of our parenting. How can we as parents feel confident and comfortable seeking advice, find our way through, and help our children thrive.

For Anke, this topic is very dear to her heart. As a parent, this is how she came to find coaching both incredibly helpful for herself and discover that this was what she wanted to do going forward so others would have the space and support she often missed.

  • The emotional rollercoaster of parenting
    May 24 2024

Managing our emotions as a parent is something we get lots of practice at, especially when the experiences our children have are different from what was expected. (both give example here). The risks and rewards of parenting can feel so much higher (and lower) than in other areas of our life. This week we are talking about riding that emotional rollercoaster when faced with challenges of parenting we did not expect.

  • Chores for Kids Take Two - Teams inside families?
    May 6 2024

Continuing on from our topic of last week, do you give chores to your kids or not - we wanted to take a step back and look at how our families work as teams and how we might be able to improve our teams’ performance.

We will be looking at what makes a good team, and what defines your families "WHY"

“ Characteristics that make up high-performing team cultures have been being studied for decades. Though the methodologies used in each study vary, when you gather and compare the research, three common themes quickly emerge: High-performing teams are marked by a sense of common understanding, psychological safety, and prosocial purpose” Harvard Business Review August 2023.

  • CHORES for kids
    Apr 16 2024

To give chores - or not to give chores - this seems to be a controversial issue! When we were asked to do a workshop around this topic, it immediately started a very lively discussion between the two of us. So we saw a real opportunity for really diving into our parental motivations to give chores. If you are listening and want to chime in the conversation - please send us a message at team@parentsarepeople.com! We’d love to hear what you think! And mind you - we are NOT telling you what Chores to give or not to give, we do not have a list of the 10 best ones prepared…we are here to help you become clear about what works for you and your family.

  • Agile Parenting - How do you deal with unexpected situations?
    Apr 3 2024

You may have noticed that we haven’t recorded a new episode in the last couple of weeks as we have had some unexpected homelife issues!

Are you a planner or do you just go with the flow? As a parent we have so many balls to keep up in the air we often become experts at organisational design to ensure smooth running of the family.

When something happens that we are not expecting, it can be really de-railing and cause us stress and anxiety. This week we are talking about how to deal with those unexpected situations in a way that minimises our stress and helps us maximise the opportunities that change can give us.

  • Parenting with Energy (levels!)
    Mar 4 2024

Family can be the most triggering relationships that we have - we see each other “warts and all”, day in and day out and what can start as a small spot of bickering between family members escalates quickly into something much bigger.

Family dynamics often involve unresolved conflicts, unmet needs, lots of expectations and past hurts. We know our family members deeply—their quirks, habits, and vulnerabilities. This familiarity can lead to heightened emotional responses. We react more intensely because we know them so well. Certain behaviours or words can act as “emotional landmines” - for example, a parent’s criticism may trigger feelings of inadequacy or rejection.

This week we are talking about using the 7 Energy levels framework to help us take back control of our reactions, develop the ability to observe a situation without judgement, and choose how we want to respond.

Why is this framework so useful and important?

The Energy Leadership Assessment can measure our attitudes and approaches to different situations and as such differes from personality tests (such as Myers briggs) because it gives us :

    • An understanding of how you react to stressful situations (and stress)

    • A way to discover new ways to reduce stress so that you can elevate your happiness, enjoy good health, and create a personalised plan to become a better partner, parent, friend, and/or leader.

    • Management of your emotions instead of them managing you, so that you can keep calm and stay positive no matter what challenges or hurdles come your way.

    • An ability to stop getting caught up in everyone else’s demands on you, and instead harness your energy and direct it towards what matters most to you.

    • A shift in your perspective, allowing you to figure out exactly what you want to create in your life and exactly how you need to go about it.

    • Gives a common language to help stop everyone taking things personally

We talk about this a lot in our workshops to help clients grow their awareness in how they parent/live and if it is working for them.

Come join us in April and find out, what your Energy Leadership Profile looks like!
