• The Crucial Role of Science Communication, Inspiring Curiosity with Leah Elson
    Jul 1 2024

In this episode, I sit down with Leah Elson, a brilliant scientist and author, whose passion for science communication and advocacy for women in STEM resonates deeply. Leah discusses her unique path balancing athletics with scientific pursuits, and the critical role of effective communication in bridging the gap between the scientific community and the public. Together, we explore how early exposure to science and public speaking can empower individuals, and reflect on the personal and societal impact of fostering curiosity and critical thinking in young minds.

We also address the pressing need to rebuild trust in science and promote diversity within scientific communities. Leah and I share insights on how to make science more accessible and engaging, especially for marginalized groups, and discuss the broader implications of inclusivity on scientific progress. This episode is a poignant reminder that true fulfillment lies beyond wealth and fame, in the essence of our inner values and the legacy of our contributions to society.

  • Raising Responsible and Appreciative Children: Balancing Discipline and Empathy in Modern Parenting
    Jun 24 2024

Can creating a more disciplined and appreciative environment truly shape the next generation into responsible adults? In this episode, we unpack the often-overlooked nuances of modern parenting. Reflecting on my own childhood, I draw contrasts between the sometimes overly-protective approaches of today and the more disciplined methods of the past. We critically explore the balance between positive reinforcement and allowing children to encounter and learn from their struggles.

We delve into the importance of teaching appreciation and responsibility, not just through words but through actions and consequences. Personal stories illustrate how children can develop a sense of accountability and empathy by being exposed to diverse cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. We also explore how significant consequences for actions can curb undesirable behaviors and foster discipline, even in affluent settings where privilege may otherwise lead to a sense of entitlement.

Our discussion extends to the fundamental principles of effective parenting, focusing on consistency, discipline, and the value of hard work. Addressing the delicate balance between discipline and abuse, we advocate for appropriate, measured responses to misconduct while underscoring the importance of clear boundaries and early education on respect and consent. This episode aims to equip parents with insights and strategies to raise well-rounded, emotionally intelligent children who contribute positively to society. Join us as we navigate the complexities of parenting with strength, serenity, and sanity.

  • A Surgeon Ruined My Life, Living in Chronic Pain with Anjelica Marsh
    Sep 13 2023

If you are curious about working with me one on one, I work with individuals, athletes, and couples from all over the world. Head over to www.nicobarraza.com to inquire more.

This week's guest is Anjelica Marsh. She is a school counselor who was a collegiate softball player that had a ankle injury that led her to a surgeon that would change her life forever.

Unfortunately there are just as many mistakes in medicine as there are healings. Anjelica shares her personal story of how a botched surgery changed her life and left her in chronic pain. I share my own story too and together we chat about the difficulties of living in chronic pain and navigating the medical mal practice legal system, as well as being your own best advocate in a healthcare scenario.

Here is a link to the article that I stumbled upon that made me want to interview Anjelica on the show http://anjelicasmoments.org/2020/04/13/to-the-doctor-who-ruined-my-life/

Here are a few more writings of hers

    http://anjelicasmoments.org/2017/12/23/trapped/

    http://anjelicasmoments.org/2021/12/31/ill-be-okay/

For many people who suffer from chronic pain it can feel like you are trapped in a jail cell in your own body. Especially when the pain was caused by the same system that should be alleviating physical pain. I hope this episode gives you some sense of community and leaves you feeling connected, seen, and not alone.

I hope you find the answers you need to feel better and to feel at peace.
