  • BBC's The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe... and Turkish Delight
    Mar 14 2024

For this year's Easter episode, we have our friend Hannah as a guest to discuss The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a British children's television drama first broadcast by the BBC in 1988.

Based on the 1950 novel by C.S. Lewis, Lucy, Edmund, Peter, and Susan Pevensie travel to a magical land through a forgotten wardrobe. Narnia is the home of the great lion Aslan. During his long absence, his arch-enemy, the evil White Witch places Narnia in an eternal winter. However, with the return of Aslan and the arrival of the four Pevensie children, the Narnians are given a hope to end the tyranny of the Witch.

Hannah and Megan discuss their memories of the movie and the book series, and sample some Turkish Delight, a sweet featured prominently in the story!

  • Bosom Buddies (1980)
    Mar 7 2024

We are starting our look into the 1980s! This week, Megan reviews Bosom Buddies. She was particularly surprised to learn that the show was not a TV rip-off of the Oscar-award winning film, Tootsie.

Bosom Buddies was an American television sitcom starring Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari. It aired on Thursday nights for two seasons on ABC from 1980-1982 and in reruns on NBC in 1984 after Tom Hanks appeared in Splash. The show features the misadventures of two single men, struggling with low-level careers in advertising. After their apartment is demolished, they disguise themselves as women in order to live in the place they can afford... a complex where no men are allowed!

The show became known for its quirky humor and its frequent use of improvisation. Though the show started out with good ratings, it failed to hold the public's interest and was canceled after two seasons.

Was it as horrible as we remember? Or did it hold up fairly well? Listen to find out!

Karen shares her memories of running home to watch all the fun, singing, and serial adventure stories like Spin and Marty and The Hardy Boys. Then, we talk about The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, which debuted in 1989. Megan shares her memories of watching the show with her cousins after school. And we briefly discuss the 70s version that we never even knew existed!

The Mickey Mouse Club was an American variety television show for kids, created by Walt Disney and produced by Walt Disney Productions, the program was first televised for four seasons, from 1955 to 1959, by ABC. This original run featured a regular, but ever-changing cast of mostly teen performers. • Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Circus Peanuts
    Nov 22 2023

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is the classic Thanksgiving comedy directed by John Hughes, starring Steve Martin and John Candy.  Control freak Neal Page (Steve Martin) is trying to get home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his wife and kids. After missing a cab (stolen by Kevin Bacon,) his flight is rerouted to a distant city in Kansas because of a freak snowstorm, and his sanity begins to fray. Worse yet, he is forced to bunk up with an annoying overly-friendly salesman Del Griffith (John Candy). Together they must overcome the insanity of holiday travel, renting cars, riding trains, and finding a strange friendship along the way.

Before Megan and Karen talk about their memories of this hilarious classic, they endeavor to eat the one candy Steve refuses to try... Circus Peanuts.

Did we love the movie? Did it hold up to our memories? Were Circus Peanuts as gross as Steve claimed? Listen to find out!

  • Friends (Thanksgiving) and Kit-Kats
    Nov 9 2023

Happy Holidays everyone! It's Friendsgiving time, and that means we finally rewatch Friends! Friends was an NBC sitcom created by Marta Kauffman and David Crane, which ran for 10 seasons from 1994-2004. The show starred 6 actors who were relatively unknown at the time and launched them almost immediately into superstardom.

Known for their extravagant Thanksgiving episodes, Friends became a bit of a divisive show, with some people loving and others hating the sitcom looking at a group of friends drinking coffee, talking about relationships, and managing the expectations of being a young adult in New York City.

Before talking about the "Brad Pitt Episode" and the "One With all the Thanksgiving Flashbacks," Steve and Megan take some time to enjoy a break, enjoy a Kit-Kat, and talk about their own memories of Thanksgiving.

Did we love the show? Did it hold up to our memories? Listen to find out!

  • Darkwing Duck and Raisinets
    Nov 2 2023

Darkwing Duck was an animated superhero comedy show that ran on the Disney Channel and ABC from 1991-1992. Part of the "Disney Block" of afterschool shows, it followed Duck Tales and was often thought to be a spin-off of that beloved show.

In his secret identity of Drake Mallard, Darkwing Duck lives in an unassuming suburban house with his adopted daughter Gosalyn. He solves crimes with the help of Gosalyn, side-kick Launchpad McQuack, and their friends.

Before getting into our memories and recap, we revisit Raisinets and listen to the commercial for the California Raisins. Megan talks about synchronized swimming, and Steve talks about his love for superheroes, even animated ones.

Did we love the show? Was it cancelled too soon? Listen to find out?

  • Gremlins and Snapple
    Oct 31 2023

Don't expose them to the light. Don't get them wet. And no matter what, don't feed them after midnight! We are reviewing Gremlins this Halloween! And subbing in for Steve, we have Megan's brother Tim, who was also part of our 50th episode extravaganza.

Gremlins is a comedy-horror film. It was written by Chris Columbus, directed by Joe Dante, and produced by Steven Spielberg. Starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, we follow the story of Billy, who receives a cute, furry creature called a Mogwai for Christmas. Things go downhill very quickly as the Mogwai gives way to a crop of lizard-like goblins who cause murder and mayhem throughout the small town.

We also enjoy this week's non-sponsored snack, Snapple! We talk about the history of the company and Wendy, the beloved "Snapple Lady" before talking about the making of Gremlins and the history of the film.

Do we still love Snapple? Did Tim enjoy the movie or was he scared? When we laughed, were we laughing with the movie or at it? Listen to find out!
