Talent or Tenacity: Discussions with Athletes, Coaches, and High Performers

By: Dr. Nicole Adams
  • Summary

  • I have the privilege of knowing some incredible athletes, coaches, and practitioners who I think the world should get to hear more from. I started this show to bring more positive stories and uplifting voices to the world of sports and high performers. I believe the mental game applies not just in sport but in our careers, family, and our general approach to life. I feel called to bring to light these wonderful humans who are involved in sport and either influence others to take greater control of their mental and physical health or lead by their tremendous examples. For Episode 6 of the Talent or Tenacity Podcast, I have the honor of interviewing Dr. Jamie Cooper, Professor and Department Head of Kinesiology at The University of Georgia. Dr. Cooper and I have known each other for many years and collaborated on academic projects, worked with mutual client athletes, and trained many hours for triathlon together! Dr. Cooper's expertise is in Obesity, Clinical Nutrition, and Sports Nutrition. However, her background as a very competitive endurance athlete (veteran of marathons, Ironman triathlons, and ultra-marathons) gives her a unique skill set in working with athletes to improve and optimize their performance through effective fueling. In this episode we discuss some of the common pitfalls athletes experience in fueling, nutrition misinformation and how to determine what fueling strategy is right for you, and we delve deeply in CARBOHYDRATES.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with Dr. William Young, a great friend and fellow athlete. Dr. Young is a Lubbock, Texas Marriage and Family Therapist who practices from the perspective of total wellness and takes a 360 degree approach to health and fitness. Our interview begins with a candid conversation about overcoming addiction and establishing lifelong habits of health and prosperity. We discuss physical activity and its role in helping one develop confidence and a sense of mastery. We then delve into overcoming BIG fears such as open water swimming. Will shares some of his experiences as an athlete that have lead him to deeper understanding of emotional functioning and to making lasting changes that enable one to thrive. You will so enjoy Will's candor and insight into some pretty deep topics. We will definitely do a "part 2" where we hope to dive into more detail on breathing techniques, cold water immersion, and other techniques that can help us cope better with the daily challenges life throws our way!
