  • Purple Rain: The 40th Anniversary
    Jul 1 2024

The 80’s. Queer. Rock and Roll. R& B. Legends. Trauma. Death to ego. Rebirth of self. Lake Minnetonka. Jerome. Morris. Apollonia. The Kid.

40 years later, Purple ☔️ Rain is still classic. A gift of musical art, a visual master piece from the musical genius, Prince. Though problematic, some may argue that Purple ☔️ Rain was the response to Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Motown as a whole. It was his entrance into mainstream media, bringing along sex, misogyny, sexism, abuse and family trauma that placed Minneapolis in a position to hold its own musically.

With our special guest, movie and culture expert Dr. Michelle Taylor, join us as we wrap up Black Music Month and revisit Patrick’s FAVORITE movie of all time, Purple ☔️ Rain.

  • The Five Heartbeats: I've Got Nothing But Love for You Baby!
    Jun 7 2024

Duck. JT. Eddie Kane (King). Dresser. Choirboy. Big Red. Jimmie. Eleanor. Baby Doll. Brotherhood. Loyalty. Race. Class. Black Arts. The Dells. The Temptations. Positive Black men in film. A classic for the culture. The Five Heartbeats.

In 1991 when Robert Townsend set out to create a film that was an ode to the Black music groups of the 1960's, he had no idea that he was creating a film that would be ingrained in American cinema and adored by all cultures for decades.

The Five Heartbeats is a film that brings together generations. From the repeated one-liners "My office hours are from 9 to 5" to the scenes that we always reenact... this was the perfect way to kick of Black Music Month!
