The Changing Room

By: The Changing Room
  • Summary

  • We are dedicated to witnessing and exploring the emotional journey of professional footballers with the aim to provide insight for those outside of the football environment and validation for those within it.

Why? we know there is a a huge gap between the perception and reality of the football journey and this misunderstanding causes hate, resentment and judgement towards players plus loneliness, fear, illness and, even tragically, completed suicide
    for some within the game.

The Changing Room is a space to illicit change in that perception. With the help and willingness to be honest in their vulnerability, our guests share their emotional experience of their football journey with the hope this will provide more understanding and compassion, which ultimately will benefit the game, those who enjoy it and those who contribute to it.

In this episode, Sue and Paul welcome Ben Clark Eden into The Changing Room as he reflects on his academy journey, explores his struggle with anxiety, staying true to himself and the freedom he now feels playing in the American Collegiate system.

Ben shares valuable insights from his time at Brighton & Hove Albion's Academy and with hindsight from his onward journey. He opens up about confusing his feelings of relief after a match as enjoyment stating 'that's not how you should live, especially as a child' and he attributes the constant anxiety he lived with 'to the worry I felt over others' opinions of me.'

A must listen to all those navigating the academy system and their parents weighing up the pros and cons for their sons.
