  • Sutton House: Home to Henry VIII's Secretary of State
    Oct 22 2022

Sutton House is the oldest house in Hackney, built in 1535. It's been the home to Ralph Sadler, secretary to Thomas Cromwell and Secretary of State to Henry VIII, John Milward, a governor of the East India Company, as well as later in the 1980s becoming a home to squatters, as well a ghost or two. (Most Haunted fans may have seen the Sutton House episode with none other than Lee Ryan from Blue!)

Sutton House's Visitor Experiences Officer Jo Nightingale takes us on a whistle-stop tour through these fascinating corridors - from the middle of Tudor Dynasty, through to the influence of the Spanish Armada, and Georgian renovations.

  • Shakespeare's Curtain Theatre
    Oct 15 2022

Forget the theatre-land of Shaftesbury Avenue and the West End. Shoreditch is the original theatre-land! The Curtain Playhouse, the second ever Elizabethan playhouse built in London, is where Shakespeare debuted Henry V and Romeo and Juliette, and where Ben Johnson even cast Shakespeare in Every Man In His Humour

It was here that theatre became something not just performed in the homes of rich people, but became accessible and democratised. Performers finally had a permanent space to push the boundaries of stage management and effects, as opposed to performing in the homes of nobility. And it all happened in this little corner of East London!

Host Elena Guthrie is joined by Archaeology Adviser to Historic England, Adam Single, to take a deep dive into where the theatre is now, and what it's life was like over 400 years ago.

  • Columbia Road
    Nov 14 2021

Located between Shoreditch, Hackney and Old Street, sits Columbia Road. You and I might know it best for the flower market and coffee shops, but do some digging and you uncover it's been the stomping ground of refugees, bodysnatchers, Dickens and drag artists.

Join us as we explore the history of the street from the 17th century, right through to today with local legend, Linda Wilkinson.
