  • Hiatus (or worse)
    Jan 25 2023

    Hi everyone, it’s Garrett. If you can’t already tell from looking at your screen, this is sort of a bad news announcement. I need to place the podcast on hiatus or potentially even shut it down at this point. The main gist is that I am learning things about my brain — call it mental health or whatever other term you wish — that require a re-ordering of priorities in how I organize my time and effort. And until I get a handle and a fuller understanding of what exactly this is and how to deal with it, I need to take things off my plate. This is indeed frustrating. I feel like I’m unable to sustain things that I ought to be able to do, but such is my lot, and God is good. Thank you for your support, and God bless.

  • The Marrow of Modern Divinity: Intros and Ch. 1, Sec. 1
    Dec 12 2022

    In this episode, we continue reading The Marrow of Modern Divinity by Edward Fisher, beginning with the remaining introductory matter and finishing at the end of Chapter 1, section 1.

    The Marrow of Modern Divinity was originally published in two parts in 1645 and 1649 respectively and attributed to the author who went by the pen name of just the initials E.F., later attributed to Edward Fisher. The core of the Marrow is a discourse among four characters, Evangelista the gospel minister, Nomist the legalist, Antinomista the antinomian, and Neophytus the young Christian. But before this, the introductory material does lay out the debate between Antonomianism and Legalism as he saw it in 1645.

    Because this is audio, I’m not going to be able to record Thomas Boston's footnotes in a way that allows the discourse to flow on audio. These notes come with the recommendation of John Belfrage as we heard in the previous episode, so it may be worth your while to look them up as we go through the series.

  • The Marrow of Modern Divinity: Front Matter
    Dec 5 2022

    In this episode, we begin reading The Marrow of Modern Divinity by Edward Fisher, beginning with just the majority of the front matter: the recommendations, preface, and dedication. These recommendations might name drop some names you've heard. We're definitely not in the weeds yet in this episode, but I do think the material to be historically valuable, and one of the purposes of this podcast is to increase the audio availability of such works. That means reading out the portions that might be less important in order to make sure these works are preserved in their completed form.

    The Marrow of Modern Divinity was originally published in two parts in 1645 and 1649 respectively and attributed to the author who went by the pen name of just the initials E.F., later believed to be Edward Fisher, a barber. His work would later be republished in 1718, helping to stoke the flames of the Marrow Controversy in the Church of Scotland. This controversy concerned whether repentance is a necessary precondition for justification or a fruit that always flows receiving Christ. As it turns out, the controversy remain ever relevant in 2022.

  • 1689 London Baptist Confession, part 4
    Nov 28 2022

    In this episode, we conclude our read through of the 32 chapters of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, beginning in chapter 23 and through the final chapter. These will include:

    * Of Lawful Oaths and Vows

    * Of the Civil Magistrate

    * Of Marriage

    * Of the Church

    * Of the Communion of Saints

    * Of Baptism and the Lord's Supper

    * Of Baptism

    * Of the Lord's Supper

    * Of the State of Man and Death and Of the Resurrection, and

    * Of the Last Judgment

    If that was confusing, note that yes, there is a chapter on the ordinances — Baptism and the Lord's Supper — and then separate chapters for each of them.

    As before, I am omitting reading out every single scripture reference in the confession because this is audio. Any source of the confession you find online will have them there, and they are great and many. Here’s the one I like.

    The plan is still to start recording The Marrow of Modern Divinity by Edward Fisher for the next series, but if you have a different thought, let me know.

    And tell your friends about the podcast!

    As before, I am omitting reading out every single scripture reference in the confession because this is audio. Any source of the confession you find online will have them there, and they are great and many. I happen to be using this one which is very readable to the eye.

  • 1689 London Baptist Confession, part 1
    Nov 7 2022

    In this episode, we're beginning a read-through of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. This recording includes the preface and the first four chapters: Of the Holy Scriptures, Of God and the Holy Trinity, Of God's Decree, and Of Creation.

    The 1689 confession is the common theological confession of Reformed Baptists even up to this day. There have been follow-on confessions such as the New Hampshire Confession, but the 1689 does appear to be the most representative and impactful.

    You'll hear shortly in the preface that the original authors included scripture references for what they believed, and they were not lying. However, listing this many scripture references in audio format just doesn't work, but if you look up the confession pretty much anywhere, those scripture references will be there for you.

    Finally, you'll notice that the authors acknowledge the contributions and brotherhood of the Westminster Assembly which produced the Westminster Confession of Faith in 1646. My Presbyterian brothers can rest assured that the Westminster Confession and Larger Catechism are on my list to cover here.

    But for now, let us sit back and digest these words of the resurrected saints.

  • Luther's Ninety-Five Theses
    Oct 31 2022

    In this inaugural episode, it so happens to be October 31st, 2022, so what better way to start than Martin Luther's Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, otherwise known as the 95 Theses, nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg on this day in 1517, sparking the Protestant Reformation.

    As a matter of introduction, I think I'm going to keep the commentary to a minimum in this podcast. The reality is that I'm actually really bad at church history. I do have a Master of Theology degree, but that actually entailed all of two actual courses in church history, which anyone who knows church history knows is barely scratching the surface. So among other things, consider this my own journey to rediscovering the riches left for us by the resurrected saints who were guided by the very same Holy Spirit who indwells us and empowers us today.
