The Mishlei Podcast

By: Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss
  • Summary

  • My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

Mishlei 14:30: The Effects of Envy/Anger on Mental and Physical Health (Part 1)

    חַיֵּי בְשָׂרִים לֵב מַרְפֵּא וּרְקַב עֲצָמוֹת קִנְאָה:

    Length: 40 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/8/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning a mystifying pasuk. Thankfully, we were able to take the ONE hint Shlomo ha'Melech gave us and develop several approaches from that. We then read the Metzudas David and Rabbeinu Yonah, which we will review tomorrow before learning the other meforshim.

I'd like to thank Aaron K. for sponsoring this week's Torah content. June is less than a month away which means that I'll soon be transitioning into "summer writing mode," with more substack articles and fewer recorded shiurim. The bulk of these articles will remain free. However, if you would like to support my Torah AND access to additional spicy written content, consider becoming a paid subscriber by going to rabbischneeweiss.substack.com.

Even a small contribution goes a long way to covering the costs of my podcasts, and will provide me with the financial freedom to produce even more Torah content for you.

Mishlei 13:20 - How We're Affected By Our Peers

    הוֹלֵךְ אֶת חֲכָמִים יֶחְכָּם וְרֹעֶה כְסִילִים יֵרוֹעַ:

    Length: 1 hour 25 minutes
Synopsis: Tonight (5/6/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a really nice "starter pasuk" which is perfect for both the newcomer to Mishlei and for seasoned veterans. We came up with three approaches, each of which was further developed with the help of the meforshim, and we came up with plenty of real-world examples for each approach. It's great to be back to our regular Mishlei schedule!

Mishlei 14:29: The Relationship Between Anger and Understanding (Part 2)

    אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם רַב תְּבוּנָה, וּקְצַר רוּחַ מֵרִים אִוֶּלֶת:

    Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (4/16/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by recapping yesterday's ideas and refining our understanding of Metzudas David. Then we tackled the amazing Rabbeinu Yonah, which was just as good as I remembered it! We concluded with one of my favorite Rambams in the Peirush ha'Mishnayos, plus a tie-in to this week's Monday Night Mishlei pasuk, and even a little Haggadah reference. All in a day's work! This shiur will resume the second week of May (בג"ה).
