Mishlei 14:29: The Relationship Between Anger and Understanding (Part 2)

    אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם רַב תְּבוּנָה, וּקְצַר רוּחַ מֵרִים אִוֶּלֶת:

    Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (4/16/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by recapping yesterday's ideas and refining our understanding of Metzudas David. Then we tackled the amazing Rabbeinu Yonah, which was just as good as I remembered it! We concluded with one of my favorite Rambams in the Peirush ha'Mishnayos, plus a tie-in to this week's Monday Night Mishlei pasuk, and even a little Haggadah reference. All in a day's work! This shiur will resume the second week of May (בג"ה).

Mishlei 13:19 - The Psychology of the Pleasure-Seeking Life

    תַּאֲוָה נִהְיָה תֶּעֱרַב לְנָפֶשׁ, וְתוֹעֲבַת כְּסִילִים סוּר מֵרָע:

    Length: 1 hour 33 minutes
Synopsis: Last night (4/15/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a difficult-to-translate pasuk which was explicitly about the psychology of pleasure-seeking. Despite the difficutlies, we were rewarded (a) with several of our own interpretations of the pasuk, (b) some fundamental but nuanced insights into psychology from Metzudas David and Rabbeinu Yonah, and (c) a guest appearance by Shadal whose commentary dovetailed nicely with one of the major themes of Pesach!

Mishlei 14:28: The Nature of the King's Glory

    בְּרׇב עָם הַדְרַת מֶלֶךְ, וּבְאֶפֶס לְאֹם מְחִתַּת רָזוֹן:

Length: 36 minutes (last 9 minutes were spliced off)
Synopsis: This morning (4/11/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began analyzing a pasuk with a famous first half and a difficult-to-translate second half. We came up with some nice ideas, too. Not sure whether a Part 2 of this shiur will be fortcoming or whether this is it for now.

Note: for some weird reason, Zoom split the recording, resulting in the last 9 minutes being made into a separate file. Since I don't know the first thing about video editing, and since the last 9 minutes didn't contain any earth-shattering insights, I'm not even going to upload it. If someone wants to volunteer to stitch the two recordings together, they can let me know and i'll send them the files.

We gleaned insights from the Meiri and Malbim as well. Didn't quite crack the Metzudas David, though. Still, fundamental ideas, as predicted!

Once upon a time, there was a podcast called The Stoic Jew. Its creator made episodes every weekday for the entirety of its first year. The frequency switched to weekly, then monthly, until eventually, the flow trickled to a stop. I know I'm not the only one who has missed this podcast and would like it to continue. I have a modest goal for getting it going again: one episode each week for the month of April. For starters. If you, too, were a fan of TSJ and are willing to be a sponsor, I have a feeling that a sponsorship might provide just the right measure of accountability to help me get the podcast back on its feet.

Mishlei 13:18 - Nuanced Ways to Reject Mussar

    רֵישׁ וְקָלוֹן פּוֹרֵעַ מוּסָר וְשֹׁמֵר תּוֹכַחַת יְכֻבָּד:

    Length: 1 hour 33 minutes
Synopsis: Tonight (4/1/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk which seemed like one of those "Shlomo ha'Melecch reached into a bag filled with Mishlei words and randomly picked seven of them to make into a pasuk" pesukim. I had my doubts about what we might learn, but we ended up learning five nuanced ideas about mussar and tochachah! I'm pleased with our haul, and I have a feeling that these ideas will stick with me ... at least, if I implement the pasuk properly!

Synopsis: This morning (3/28/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we came back for another attempt at yesterday's difficult pasuk - and this time, we managed to get ideas! This week's Torah content has been sponsored anonymously. When I asked the donor what they'd like their dedicatory message to say, they responded: "You can say it was because of your Dennis Rodman breakthrough" (referring to a point I made in a recent Megilah shiur). I love feedback like this because it shows me that people enjoy and gain from the sometimes eclectic Torah I share. Thank you for your support!
