Making nouns from adjectives by using the definite article - Criando substantivos a partir de adjetivos usando o artigo definido.

We can change some adjectives to nouns by using the definite article - Podemos mudar alguns adjetivos para substantivos usando o artigo definido.

These nouns are always plural. - Esses substantivos são sempre plurais.

adjective - adjetivo

rich - rico

poor - pobre

unemployed - desempregado

homeless - sem teto

noun - substantivo

the rich = os ricos -  rich people in general

the poor = os pobres -  poor people in general

the unemployed = os desempregados - unemployed people in general 

the homeless = os sem teto - homeless people in general

eg. 

The unemployed are often helped by the government - Os desempregados são muitas vezes ajudados pelo governo.

A region is a particular part of a country - Uma região é uma parte específica de um país.

An area is a particular part of a town or city - Uma área é uma parte específica de uma cidade pequena ou uma cidade grande.

industry - indústria, negócio

agriculture - agricultura

Industrial - industrial

Agricultural - agrícola

A farmer works in agriculture - Um agricultor trabalha na área da agricultura.

A factory worker works in industry - Um operário trabalha no ramo da indústria.

society - sociedade, comunidade, associação

social - social

Society means everyone who lives in a particular country, area or city. Society can also mean people in general - SOCIETY significa todos que vivem em um determinado país, área ou cidade. SOCIETY também pode significar pessoas em geral.

eg. 

Drugs and crime are some of the biggest dangers to society - As drogas e o crime são alguns dos maiores perigos para a sociedade.

We use the adjective social when we talk about relationships between people or groups of people - Usamos o adjetivo SOCIAL quando falamos de relacionamentos entre pessoas ou grupos de pessoas.

Unemployment is an example of a social problem - O desemprego é um exemplo de problema social.

Apostrophe - apóstrofe         

We use an apostrophe with the possessive ’S - Usamos apóstrofe com o possessivo ‘S.

eg.

This is Andy’s book - Este é o livro do Andy.

When the noun is plural, the apostrophe comes after the S - Quando o substantivo está no plural, a apóstrofe vem depois do S.

eg.

The boys’ shirts were very dirty - As camisas dos meninos estavam muito sujas.

With irregular plurals or plural words without S, the apostrophe comes before the S - Com plurais irregulares ou palavras no plural sem S, a apóstrofe vem antes do S.

eg.

The children’s books were on the floor - Os livros das crianças estavam no chão.         

We use an apostrophe with contractions - Usamos apóstrofe com contrações.

eg.

I can’t speak French - Eu não sei falar francês.

He’s got a new mobile phone - Ele tem um celular novo.

They didn’t go on holiday last year - Eles não saíram de férias no ano passado.

We use an apostrophe when we talk about time in the future - Usamos apóstrofe quando falamos de tempo no futuro.

eg.

In 1 year’s time = 1 year in the future - Daqui a 1 ano = 1 ano no futuro

In 2 years’ time = 2 years in the future - Daqui a 2 anos = 2 anos no futuro

In 10 minutes’ time = 10 minutes in the future - Em 10 minutos = 10 minutos no futuro

IN SPITE OF can be used instead of DESPITE, in less formal English - IN SPITE OF pode ser usado em vez de DESPITE, em inglês menos formal.

IN SPITE OF is used as a preposition - IN SPITE OF é usado como preposição.

In Spite Of + Noun

eg. 

I got the job in spite of my scruffy appearance - Consegui o emprego apesar da minha aparência desalinhada / apesar de estar mal vestido.

We went out in spite of the rain - Nós saímos apesar da chuva.

We understood him in spite of his accent - Nós o entendíamos apesar de seu sotaque.

IN SPITE OF is the opposite of BECAUSE OF - IN SPITE OF é o oposto de BECAUSE OF.

Compare:

She passed her exams in spite of her terrible teacher - Ela passou nos exames apesar de seu terrível professor.

She passed her exams because of her wonderful teacher - Ela passou nos exames por causa de seu professor maravilhoso.

IN SPITE OF can be followed by an -ING form - IN SPITE OF pode ser seguido por um verbo no formato de  -ING.

In spite of having a headache I enjoyed the film - Apesar da dor de cabeça, gostei do filme.

IN SPITE OF cannot be followed directly by a THAT-clause. Instead, we can use IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT - IN SPITE OF não pode ser seguida diretamente por uma oração com THAT. Em vez de usar apenas THAT, podemos usar IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT.

He is good company, in spite of the fact that he talks all the time - Ele é uma boa companhia, apesar de falar o tempo todo.

despite - apesar de, não obstante

DESPITE has exactly the same meaning as ALTHOUGH. However, they use different constructions - DESPITE tem exatamente o mesmo significado que embora. No entanto, eles usam construções diferentes.

ALTHOUGH is followed by a clause (with a verb) - ALTHOUGH é seguido por uma oração (com um verbo).

DESPITE is followed by a noun, pronoun, or gerund (not a verb) - DESPITE é seguido por um substantivo, pronome ou gerúndio (não um verbo).

We always use ALTHOUGH with a clause, and DESPITE with a noun or pronoun - Sempre usamos ALTHOUGH com uma oração e DESPITE com um substantivo ou pronome.

eg. 

Despite his money problems, he is happy. (‘his money problems’ - no verb) - Apesar de seus problemas de dinheiro, ele é feliz.

Although he has money problems, he is happy. (‘he has money problems’ - verb) - Embora ele tenha problemas de dinheiro, ele é feliz.

Some people are unhappy despite having lots of money - Algumas pessoas são infelizes apesar de terem muito dinheiro.

Footballers sometimes have to play despite bad weather - de vez em quando os jogadores de futebol têm que jogar apesar do mau tempo.

You might have to smile in a job interview despite being in a bad mood - Talvez você tenha que sorrir em uma entrevista de emprego, apesar de estar de mau humor.

even though -  embora, apesar de, mesmo que

ALTHOUGH and EVEN THOUGH are linking words - ALTHOUGH e EVEN THOUGH são palavras de ligação.

They have the same meaning - Elas têm o mesmo significado.

They are similar to ‘BUT’ - Eles são semelhantes ao 'BUT'.

Look at these sentences - Veja essas frases.

eg. 

I studied hard but I didn’t pass the exam - Estudei muito, mas não passei no exame.

Although I studied hard, I didn’t pass the exam - Apesar de ter estudado muito, não passei no exame.

She used to love Robert, but now she wants to marry Mike - Ela costumava amar Robert, mas agora ela quer se casar com Mike.

Although she used to love Robert, she wants to marry Mike now - Embora ela amasse Robert, ela quer se casar com Mike agora.

I sometimes have to keep working although I'm tired - Às vezes tenho que continuar trabalhando embora esteja cansado.

I sometimes buy new clothes although I can’t really afford them - Às vezes compro roupas novas, embora não eu não tenha condições de bancá-las.

People smoke even though they know it's bad for their health - As pessoas fumam mesmo sabendo que é ruim para a saúde.

We use a reflexive pronoun when the same person is both the subject and the object of a sentence - Usamos um pronome reflexivo quando a mesma pessoa é sujeito e objeto de uma frase.

eg.

My friend taught himself Chinese by listening to CDs - Meu amigo aprendeu chinês sozinho ouvindo CDs.

I looked at myself in the mirror and thought I needed to shave - Eu me olhei no espelho e pensei que precisava me barbear.

We can't say 'I looked at me in the mirror.' We must say 'I looked at myself in the mirror.' - Não podemos dizer ''I looked at me in the mirror'. Devemos dizer 'I looked at myself in the mirror'.
