  • Episode 33: Mad Libs, clearly, are not our strong suit.
    Jun 28 2024

Public Pool Skin Infection. Goblin Cock. Three-Inch Infection (I'm sensing a theme...). The Taco Bell Three. Run For Cover.

What's in a band name, anyway? What makes a good one? This week, once we get past all of Jase's insecurities, rob Mike of his innocence, and toy with Nick's fragile emotions, we eventually get down to the business of band names.

Back in the day, you could name your band anything you wanted, change it, change members, etc. and no one would care. In the modern age of social media, a band needs to consider all things and all possible permutations of things to come related to the band name (including what the acronym of the band might be; I'm looking at you, Jimmy Eat World). We call this "branding." And from the outset, you need to not only name your band something cool, clever, catchy, and fun, you must also be original (meaning, don't name your band "The Guess Who" when there's already a band called "The Who" in popularity).

We have some fun with a band name generator and go over some of our favorite and least favorite band names. You might even learn a thing or two!

The love is fast, but it's ugly.

Thanks to everyone who's come out to our shows, either deliberately or because your friend dragged you out to the bar that night. We recently played the Barton Orchards Food Truck festival; a staggering 6-hour gig; five 45-minute sets punctuated by great food, beaitiful weather, adorable puppies, and local whiskey. We had a blast and can't wait to be back in November!

We always have a blast playing for you guys - you give us so much love and our only aim is to take you back to the 90's. We love all of you and love interacting with y'all. We're happy to take pics, sign autographs, do body shots (whatever that is), or anything else! We had a blast at your birthday party, Melissa! • Episode 32: Why is it so hard to find a band?
    Jun 13 2024

Why is it so hard to find a band? When we were kids (before social media was the center of everyone's life, if you want to know how old we are), you'd find bands organically; your neighbor, friend, classmate, etc. Back in the day, Craigslist used to be safe for kids (now it's just for weird hookups - hit me up in the m4mmmtw forum, by the way, if you're into crucifixion fetishes). But these days, people are desperate to find bands and have difficulty doing so. It gets even harder (giggity) as you get older, since everyone has baggage; kids, careers, vices, bitterness from previous bands, etc., or they're stuck in their ways, have dozens of songs that they expect others to learn (in other words, you're just helping to realize someone else's dream), or, the worst, they just haven't grown up; no money, transportation, or are just flakey or irresponsible.

Last week (the week before this podcast was released, the week after it was recorded), Run For Cover celebrated our 6th anniversary! If you would have told me (Jase) that the guys (well, most of them, anyway) that I met that one fateful night at a friend's house to try each other out, playing some Seven Mary Three and Third Eye Blind, not really sure where things would go, but for some reason scheduling our first gig three weeks from then... I would not have believed you. I don't have stats, but in my experience, local/cover bands just don't last that long, even when money and popularity is involved, so I'm ecstatic.

In this episode, we discuss what it takes to find and keep quality band members; a topic we haven't had to deal with in quite some time, thankfully. After six years, we each have some significant insight into what makes a band work or not work (not to mention what to do or not do to even just find other musicians).

  • Episode 31: Hop onto my dream ride: A.I. music is better than people music.
    May 23 2024

This week, the guys tackle a topic that's important in just about every industry - A.I. We explore some AI-generated music with Udio, a service that lets you type prompts in and it'll create a fully-produced, radio-ready song with singing and full-band arrangement. It's remarkable how far AI has come and terrifying how far it can (and probably will go). We explore a number of genres and styles - some are better than others, but, with as good as it is now, it'll be indistinguishable from human-created music in the very near future. To that point, you probably have been listening to AI-generated music for several years now and haven't even noticed...

Oh, and don't tell anyone, but Jase is terrified of spiders.

  • Episode 30: Send us money to buy giant inflatable dog heads! (Who are we kidding? We'll spend it all binge-eating at Taco Bell)
    May 2 2024

We promised not to name any more episodes after U2, and we held up our end of the deal. It was VERY difficult to resist, especially after such brilliant quips like "U2-icide." The crazy thing is, none of us really listen to U2, but as performers, it's impossible to deny their influence - and then with their recent residency at the round ball thing in Vegas, they're back in the spotlight. Before that, they were only in the news around 2012 because their album came free with on iTunes with new iPhones, so they became a meme for people that don't like them and couldn't get rid of the album.

Goddamn it. Here we go, talking about U2 again. Okay. No more.

How cheap is Nick? Why won't he just buy new sticks? For the love of god, stop hitting your drums with frayed, splintered chopsticks!!! Mike and J have to change strings every couple weeks; new bass strings are $50, new guitar strings are $15, yet Nick has been using the same $14 sticks he bought in 2014. GHAAAAA!!! Okay, now that that's off my chest...

Voice care, hearing concerns, keto & weight loss, the eclipse, mobile home depreciation - we talk about it all in this episode! Mike & J recently saw Jimmy Eat World and Fall Out Boy in concert, so we talk about the logistics of concertgoing (logistics; strikingly captivating podcasting, amirite?)

Thanks to everyone who either deliberately comes out to see us or just happens to be there when we're playing. We had a blast playing for you these last couple weeks; shout out to the West Point cadets who joined us at the Firstie Club on the 25th of April and the wonderful crowd at Gleason's in Peekskill, NY two days later! • Episode 29: Find out how many Panera sandwiches Mike can cram into his F hole!
    Apr 11 2024

Mike gets a new guitar. Jase falls alseep to the sound of sweet, sweet hellscapes. Nick saves electricity.

Our main topic this week is revisiting our favorite bands' first albums; Jase with Hanson, Mike with Green Day, and Nick with Rush. Learn about the bands and listen with us as we discuss these first albums in-depth and how they relate to the bands' modern relases.

  • Episode 28: Bono changes their Sphere set daily to avoid committing U2-icide.
    Apr 4 2024

Jase argues with AI (and loses). Nick discusses economics. Mike reads obituaries! All around, a good podcast, compelling for all audiences! Nick tells us a dream (yawn) for like 10 minutes. As boring as it is, on the plus side, Jase is kind of a badass in Nick’s dreams (though, he chokes when it really matters). J bathes in hollandaise sauce amidst the band arguing the merits of clarified butter (ghee). Feetfinder makes its resurgence! What should we search for? Bunions? Hammertoes?

Honestly, folks, I listened to this whole thing and have - really - no idea what this pod was about. Was it about music? I dunno. Did J talk about Hanson? Probably. Anyway, we had a lot of fun recording this. Hope you dig it - come out and see us live. Thanks to everyone who either deliberately comes out to see us or just happens to be there when we're playing. • Episode 27: Trying to be cool like The Edge, Jase changes his stage name to "The Corner Piece"
    Mar 21 2024

He initially changed it to The Middle, but lawsuits from Jimmy Eat World soon followed.

    ---

Folks, we got a fun one for you this week! Mike plays guitar during the whole episode, demonstrating some super radical tones from his guitar effects processor. Our primary topic, which we don't even SLIGHTLY stick to, like, at all, is how we, as a cover band, try to play the right notes, but often fail; but does anyone other than musicians notice? Unlikely. We discuss some stage SNAFUs, the few times we've restarted songs on stage (which is a big no-no; dare I say an unspoken rule for live performances). We also discuss why we use iPads live. Many local original acts like to poke fun at cover bands that use iPads, but they're not playing 200 songs on a rotating basis. It's not that we sit there and read lyrics while we're playing, but an occasional reminder of how the next verse starts is helpful (plus we use them to send MIDI data to all of our equipment to change presets, tunings, parameters, etc.) Anyway, we had a lot of fun recording this. Hope you dig it - come out and see us live. Thanks to everyone who either deliberately comes out to see us or just happens to be there when we're playing. • Episode 26: Dude, nobody WANTS to be a bass player; you just end up in that role.
    Mar 16 2024

...And then Mike showed up and was an amazing and natural bassist! ... But now he's on guitar... And Jase is on bass? What? What even IS this band?

    ...

As we approach our 6th anniversary of being together as a band, we discuss how incredible our last show was (shout out to Gleason's in Peekskill) - how awesome the audience was, how toasted Jase was, etc. We even met up with another band who was playing next door (False Start) and stood around for 20 minutes talking shop with them (Jase had actually jammed with the drummer!).

Our main topic of the day is how playing music with others develops you as a musician. Everyone in this band has had many years of experience playing with others; cover bands, original bands, open mics - you name it! Not only is jamming with others important, you also need to perform in front of people and watch others play. It's not always just about ego or comparison, but it teaches you to have a realistic appraisal of your skills, your understanding of music, your understanding of where you can fit in, and helps to keep your finger on the pulse of your local music scene.
