Ludwig Kalisch war Gründer der Sonntagszeitung „Der Demokrat“ und der Karnevalszeitschrift „Narrhalla“, in welchen er Feudalismus und Zensur bekämpfte, was Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein höchst gefährliches Unterfangen war. Nachdem er zum Tode verurteilt wurde, lebte und arbeitete er als Journalist in London und Paris.
