William Bell Riley (March 22, 1861 - December 5, 1947) was known as "The Grand Old Man of Fundamentalism". Born and educated in Indiana, Riley received his teacher's certificate and, later, graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He served several Baptist churches in Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois before taking the pastorate at the First Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN, in 1897.

Renowned classicist Bernard Knox observes in his superb introduction that although the violence of the Iliad is grim and relentless, it coexists with both images of civilized life and a poignant yearning for peace.
