Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was arguably Germany's most famous poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. The Criminal from Lost Honour is written in the form of a crime report, and is notable as an early attempt at psychological analysis of the criminal Christian Wolf. In particular, Schiller delves into the impact of early experiences, rejections, and humiliations on the descent on the man from honest publican to criminal and murderer.

Leitch Ritchie (1800–1865) was a Scottish novelist and journalist, who is best known for "The Man-Wolf" - one of the first British werewolf stories. At the ceremony of the ducking of the fishermen, a knight is accidently pitched into the river by his servant Hugues. This humiliation, which occurs in the presence of the beautiful damsel Beatrix, causes the knight to go on a drinking spree that night, as a result of which he sets off home very late indeed. Travelling through the forest at night, he has a series of adventures which end in him being turned into a werewolf.

Edgar Alfred Jepson (1863-1938) was an English author best known for his adventure and detective fiction. He also wrote supernatural and fantasy stories . Robert Eustace was the pen name of Eustace Robert Barton (1854-1943), an English doctor and author of mystery and crime fiction with a theme of scientific innovation. The Tea-Leaf is the most famous short story of these authors and was a forerunner of the locked-room mystery.

Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was an American author who wrote weird fiction and terrifying horror stories. The Right Hand of Doom features one of his most fascinating characters, the puritan Soloman Kane. Kane is staying at an inn where in the taproom a braggard is boasting at having brought the evil necromancer Roger Simeon to justice. Simeon is to be hanged the next day. Percival Christopher Wren (1875 - 1941) was an English writer of adventure fiction mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa.
