Oktober 1933, drei Tage vor Samhain, in der das Tor zur Anderswelt weit offen stand, und die Toten geehrt wurden und man sich gleichzeitig vor den bösen Geistern schützen musste, als Inspektor Wolfford bei Holmes und Watson in der Baker Street auftauchte und um Hilfe bat. Die Hebamme Mrs. Hughes wurde tot in ihrer Wohnung aufgefunden. Um die Leiche herum wurden fünf Kürbisse platziert, jeder davon mit einer Fratze versehen und hell erleuchtet. Gleich mehrere Ungereimtheiten stachen Holmes ins Auge und somit stellte der Fall auch den Meisterdetektiv und seinen Gehilfen vor ein Rätsel.
