Acerca de esta escucha

Barbara Cleverly, best-selling author of the Joe Sandilands investigations, whisks listeners to 1920s Cambridge, a European intellectual capital on the cusp of dramatic change, with a case to be solved by an ingenious new sleuth....

Great Britain, 1923: Detective Inspector John Redfyre is a godsend to the Cambridge CID. A handsome young veteran bred among the city's educated elite, he is no stranger to the set running its esteemed colleges and universities - a society that previously seemed impenetrable to even those at the top of local law enforcement, especially with the force plagued by its own history of corruption.

When Redfyre is invited to attend the annual St. Barnabas College Christmas concert in his Aunt Henrietta's stead, he is expecting a quiet evening, though perhaps a bit of matchmaking mischief on his aunt's part. But he arrives to witness a minor scandal: Juno Proudfoot, the trumpeter of the headlining musical duo, is a woman, and a young one at that - practically unheard of in conservative academic circles.

When she suffers a near-fatal fall after the close of the show, Redfyre must consider whether someone was trying to kill her. Has her musical talent, her beauty, or perhaps, most importantly, her gender provoked a dangerous criminal to act?

Redfyre must both seek advice from and keep an eye on old friends to catch his man before more innocents fall victim.

The perfect marriage of narrative and narrator!

What a wonderful book to read at Christmas time!
There could not be a more perfect pairing than this series and this reader. The narrator's impeccable interpretation of the author's delightful characters and interesting tales is spot on. This is one of those books where you wish you could hop into the story and spend time with all of the characters.

Reader Steven Crossley charmingly narrates the story and performs the characters in a manner that exactly fits the author's intent, imho. I'm very glad to have this and her other Inspector Redfyre book, Invitation to Die, in my library. I definitely hope Ms. Cleverly adds more books to the Inspector Redfyre Mystery series and holds onto Steven Crossley as narrator. More tales during the Yuletide would be fun, too. I am a fan!

Cleverly fan

Verbose and long winded. Narration not bad. Well researched and a fairly good story although ladies suffrage has been rather overdone and didn't quite carry the reason for the misogyny.

Too preachy

Cut the interminable dialogue in half and it would be pretty good. The same subject matter has been well done elsewhere. I suggest looking further.

I Quite Liked This Audiobook

I liked the gentle, subtle way this read wound around... what others described as boring and dull was misunderstood.. it is a true British cozy.. understated..

Well written, but...

Well written, but didn't give you a chance to solve the mystery yourself. Vital clues were withheld so that the author could have a dramatic reveal at the end.

The never ending struggle.

An extremely pleasant surprise which is not revealed by the title. Post WWI, a murder mystery set in Cambridge giving the reader an insider's view of misogyny as a cultural given of women's' inferiority as they struggle for access to education and acknowledgment as equals to men, but written from the standpoint of a semi-tolerant male police inspector. Excellent.

Tried to like this book

I purchased this because of some positive reviews. However, I found myself annoyed with what seemed to be the author's agendas (for example feminist politics - and I hasten to mention that I am a feminist), which did to seem to be her characters' agendas. The characters required most often to give "lectures" seemed very two dimensional. I gave up after about 90 minutes.
