Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Packed with new reporting, Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party tracks Trump’s improbable journey from disgraced and defeated former president to the dominant force, yet again, in the Republican Party. From his exile in Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump has become more extreme, vengeful, and divorced from reality than he was on January 6, 2021. His meddling damaged the GOP’s electoral prospects for third consecutive election in 2022. His legal troubles are mounting. Yet he re-emerged as the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

The Reckoning will examine America’s national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration’s corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD - a new leader alone cannot fix us.

Ascending to the leadership role of US Attorney for the Southern District, which includes Manhattan and several counties to the north, is a capstone to any legal career: it entails guiding a team of the best lawyers in America in selecting and winning cases that often have global import. Geoffrey Berman was honored to be tapped for the job by Donald Trump in 2018. The manner in which Trump had dispatched his predecessor Preet Bharara was troubling, but the institution was fabled for its independence. Surely he could manage.

In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.

Resumen del Editor
Retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, who found himself at the center of a firestorm for his decision to report the infamous phone call that led to presidential impeachment, tells his own story for the first time. Here, Right Matters is a stirring account of Vindman's childhood as an immigrant growing up in New York City, his career in service of his new home on the battlefield and at the White House , and the decisions leading up to, and fallout surrounding, his exposure of President Trump's abuse of power.
0900, Thursday, July 25, 2019: President Trump called Ukraine’s President Zelensky, supposedly to congratulate him on his recent victory. In the months that followed, the American public would only learn what happened on that call because Alexander Vindman felt duty-bound to report it up the chain of command: that the President of the United States had extorted a foreign ally to damage a political challenger at home. Vindman’s actions and subsequent testimony before congress would lead to Trump’s impeachment and affirm Vindman's belief that he had done the right thing in the face of intense pressure to stay silent. But it would come at an enormous cost, straining relationships with colleagues, superiors, and even his own father, and eventually end his decorated career in the US Army, by a Trump administration intent on retribution.
Here, Right Matters is Vindman’s proud, passionate, and candid account of his family, his career, and the moment of truth he faced for his nation. As an immigrant, raised by a father who fled the Soviet Union in pursuit of a better life for his children, Vindman learned about respect for truth throughout his education and military service. As this memoir makes clear, his decision to speak up about the July 25th call was never a choice: It was Vindman’s duty, as a naturalized citizen and member of the armed forces. In the wake of his testimony, he would endure furious partisan attacks on his record and his loyalty. But far louder was the extraordinary chorus of support from citizens who were collectively intent on reaffirming an abiding American commitment to integrity.
In the face of a sure-fire career derailment and public excoriation, Vindman heeded the lessons from the people and institutions who instilled in him the moral compass and the courage to act decisively. Like so many other American immigrant families, the Vindmans had to learn to build a life from scratch and take big risks to achieve important goals. Here, Right Matters is about the quiet heroes who keep us safe; but, above all, it is a call to arms for those who refuse to let America betray its true self.

From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he'd long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

Historia
From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he'd long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

In the summer of 2000, the most decorated soldier in Israel's history - Ehud Barak - set himself a challenge as daunting as any he had faced on the battlefield: to secure a final peace with the Palestinians. He would propose two states for two peoples, with a shared capital in Jerusalem. He knew the risks of failure. But he also knew the risks of not trying: letting slip perhaps the last chance for a generation to secure genuine peace. It was a moment of truth.

Acclaimed historian Heather Cox Richardson traces the shifting ideology of the Republican Party from the antebellum era to the Great Recession. While progressive Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower revived Lincoln’s vision and expanded the government, their opponents appealed to Americans’ latent racism and xenophobia to regain political power, linking taxation and regulation to redistribution and socialism. In the modern era, the schism within the Republican Party has grown wider, pulling the GOP ever further from its founding principles.

Later that autumn, the English gathered their first successful harvest and lifted the specter of starvation. Ousamequin and 90 of his men then visited Plymouth for the 'First Thanksgiving'. For half a century, as an uneasy peace hung over Europe, ferocious proxy wars raged in the Cold War’s killing fields, resulting in more than 14 million dead - victims who remain largely forgotten and all but lost to history.

A Must-read Book by and about an American Patriot
Several weeks ago, I watched the excellent interview of Alexander Vindman on CBS Sunday Morning,. Afterwards, I bought his book, which I have found to be riveting, inspiring and well-crafted. I had not watched Vindman's testimony at the impeachment but had been well aware of it through the media. Vindman has my profound respect and gratitude for doing the right thing and standing up for the Constitution. I will be recommending his book widely. I wish him all the best as he continues his mission to serve the U.S. offering his many outstanding skills and talents. Alexander Vindman is a true American patriot and a national treasure.

Thank you
My deepest thank you for your service and courage. I applauded you because it takes courage to stand up to a bully. My heart hurts because the US Army was too sorry knowing how disastrous Donald Trump was and still is. (To allow you the promotion that was stolen from you). You were cheated out of a stellar career from liars who was willing and still willing to lie, cheat and to do whatever it takes to win. I still can’t believe it. Please take care of yourself and your family. Although you don’t know me and I do not know you, I’m proud of you . I have prayed for you and will continue to do so for you and your family. Take care 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾.

A book from a true American hero
As many of us watched the brave Lt. Col Vindman testify on that day, this book is so much more then an in depth detail of that specific testimony. This book is more about love, loyalty, learning & overcoming the many obstacles in life. Thank you Lt. Col. Vindman for your honesty & dedication, not just for what you sacrificed for our country but in showing the world that there are still good people out there willing to stand up to wrong. Because this is America, and here, right matters! ❤️

We can be proud
This book is an unapologetic statement of personal values lived out in teal time. It is worth every minute I spent listening. As a nation we need to hear and treasure these honest stories of heroism.

Neat to learn more about Vindman
This book is short and lacks lots of detail. If you are a hardcore news person that reads all the political books then this book may be slightly disappointing. I really did enjoy learning more about how he met his wife but I wish it was longer.

An American Hero
Thank you so much Alexander Vindman, for your service, for your bravery, and for saving our country from one of the greatest dangers we have ever faced - a corrupt rogue president who did everything in his power to become a dictator, and who is still a near and present danger to our country. You were a significant player in helping us to hold our ground. I shudder to think of what could have been, and what might still come if our country defers. I watched your testimony in the impeachment trials and have been a strong admirer ever since. It is truly heartwarming to know that there are people like you in this country, and I look forward to seeing what your future brings. There is no doubt that you will continue to make a significant contribution to this country in whatever capacity you find yourself.
The book was a great read, and I learned a lot of details about the events leading up to that fateful phone call, and the fallout and impact it had on you and your family. I was always curious about how you knew so quickly that what Trump said was impeachable. Now I understand that it was the depth of your military and policy training, and that you had been involved in many of the events leading up to that phone call, which put you on guard and ready to respond so quickly. During that time I followed the events closely, yet I still struggled to put all the pieces together with the correct timelines, locations and players. You laid it all out as a riveting and easy-to-read story. It was both informative and very fascinating to read.
Thank you again for your service, for being a great American, and just for being who you are.

Inspiring and Courageous
A memoir of courage and dedication to American democracy. I learned about the work of the national security council and the experts who create foreign policy. Vindman is exactly the kind of person we need in our government.

Grateful to Lt. Col. Vindman for his honorable service, courage and sacrifice.
As we watched the horror of the 45th administration, as a veteran, I’m thankful and grateful for people like Lt. Col. Vindman. Thank you sir. I wish you well. To any who may read this know that the horror show is not over.
