Acerca de esta escucha

An electrifying first novel that shocks by its language, its circumstances, and its brutal honesty, Push recounts a young black street-girl's horrendous and redemptive journey through a Harlem inferno. For Precious Jones, 16 and pregnant with her father's child, miraculous hope appears and the world begins to open up for her when a courageous, determined teacher bullies, cajoles, and inspires her to learn to read, to define her own feelings and set them down in a diary.

Gritty...but too short

I downloaded this book after seeing a preview of the film and I must say that the first-person narration gives it a richness that draws the listener in. However, I was disappointed that the audiobook was so short and that there wasn't any kind of epilogue.

Exciting and moving

This book was a refreshing look at the inner mind of a abused young woman finding her own words. I was moved from the beginning to the end and wanted to learn more when it was over. Superb and realistic writing of abuse first hand from the innocents mouth. I wanted to stand up for her and shout no more. I felt rage for the people who misused and misrepresented her. Kudos to the writer.

PUSH

I really enjoyed the book..it was better than the movie. I wish the movie would have shown more of the background. the book for more was powerful. It was a child becoming a woman. It was life for so many young women who was scared to talk n share. So with that being said PUSH...on for your dreams if Precious could do it so could u

Gripping,thought-provoking & moving all in one.

Would you listen to Push again? Why?

Yes.The narrator was excellent & I enjoyed the story on all levels.

What did you like best about this story?

The raw,in-your-face the way the narrator read. You could feel every situation through out the book.

Which character – as performed by Sapphire – was your favorite?

Not as a person, but as a character that would be the mother of Precious, because her damage as a human being really comes out every time her parts are read & it helps one understand how Precious ended up the way she did despite how hard she tried to improve herself.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Who your child becomes starts with the mother.

Any additional comments?

No

Very impacting!

I was assigned to read this book in my clinical social work masters program to depict the quality of relationship between Precious and her mother. I have got to say this is a very impacting story to hear. I love how it touches on a lot of topics from historical trauma, trauma, generational poverty, racism, stereotypes, childhood abuse, sexual abuse, community distrust in the system, and more.
Everyone should read/hear this.

I bought the book to read along with the audible and noticed the audio skipped over some parts from the book. Also, the dates/years in the book is not the same from the audible. That explains the 4 stars for performance.

Emotionally Captivating

When you read books, they typically have perfect grammar and use big words. Push brings you into the reality of an illiterate girl who has suffered for most of her life. Sapphire really pulls you in the world of Precious Jones with her style of writing that connects you to Precious and everything that goes on in her life.

Reality

This is a wonderful book that I can identify with. This book spells out many of the reasons why there is a social underclass.... Mental illness is primary. A must read.
