As usual, he merges plot, setting, and character to create a haunting and unforgettable picture of the cruelties of individuals—and of the English class system.
The story constantly counterposes evil and malice with essential human decency, which is somehow able to stand up to—and triumph over—the bad side of human nature and reveal the promise of genuine love. It is a masterpiece that speaks to the fears and hopes that live in all of us.
