Fantastic!

This is such an excellent reference book for teachers! I've started to call it a "toolbook!" Review it it often than start to put the techniques in action one at a time.

Fantastic book

This book is an excellent collection of effective teaching strategies. I deeply appreciate how each strategy is named, clearly described, and discussed. Each edition has been better than the last, and I particularly liked the new introductory material at the beginning. I’ve heard Dylon William say that teacher observation has limited value. But Doug Lemov has shown that the habits and practices of effective teachers can be observed and shared. And I love how the book dispenses advice by sharing the stories of other teachers, rather than of the author. It makes the book so powerful.

A few things I would improve:
- the text in many tips feel repetitive. Peps McCrea is frequently cited in this book, and he sets a new standard for concise in his own writing! The book would be more effective if it was tightly edited for conciseness. Oliver Caviglioli is also cited and he is another fantastic example of the power of concise explanations.
- Doug Lemov should narrate the book himself.
He is so deeply authentic and emotive when he speaks publicly. This narrator was fine, but he completely lacked Doug’s thoughtful sincerity. I found the narrator jarring only because he sounded trendy and even sardonic, the opposite of Doug. I would listen to this book again and again just to hear Doug’s gentle confidence and encouragement.
- I only heard the information about how to watch the videos at the end. It would have been good to hear this upfront, but maybe I missed it. There are a LOT of references to videos and it detracts from the audiobook that the listener doesn’t seem to have a way to access them.

All that said, I think this book is one of the most important texts for improving and truly professionalizing teaching. I was taught that teaching is more art than science. Doug has proved that wrong. He exposes why some practices seem like a good idea but aren’t, and provides thoughtful explanations for why others are deeply important. Everyone concerned with education should read this. My wish would be for Doug to write a version specific for special education so that special educators could clearly see their own best practices put under the same microscope. All of this content applies to every classroom, and I think these tips would revolutionize special education in a way that is desperately needed. But teachers in many special classrooms will discredit these tips if they aren’t made explicitly applicable to students with a range of special education needs, particularly developmental disabilities. Maybe Doug could partner with someone to make those explicit links?!?

Absolutely outstanding: Profoundly Practicial

This is one the best education books available today. Alongside Finnish Lessons, First Days of School, and Make it Stick, Lemov's 3rd edition is exceptional. Teach like a champion is philosophically grounded - devoid of wishful thinking or ideology driven non-sense. Lemov's data and experince driven approach is profoundly practical and fundamentally works in the classroom. Drop whatever ed book you are reading and read this one instead.
